AN stands for Army-Navy.

The -# is roughly equivilent to 16ths, i.e. -4 = 4/16 or 1/4.

What Geo said.

AN or Army Navy refers to a specific type of fitting. It has a tapered seat and seals much like the stock lines in the car, but with a different angle on the taper.

BTW, obviously AN and metric fittings are NOT interchangeable. When you see folks referring to the use of "AN" fittings on these cars they generally are using a combination of AN adaptors and reusable hose ends for the hard lines connections and metric reusable hose ends to complete the connections at the fuel rail.
