I do not understand why people think it is a vacuum leak when the plugs are black. Wouldn't it more likely be a blown FPR or damper or a weak spark?

Succes! Turns out it was a vacuum leak. The hose that connects the manifold to the idle stabilzer was completely torn into two pieces. So I hooked up a new one and it fired right up. Runs great. Now I'm off to buy an air filter and take a victory lap.

Great to hear it! - gotta love when it's a fairly simple/cheap fix.
