Default do it yourself paint job

anyone know any good online articles about do it yourself painting?

any about specifically painting a 944?

how good of a job can it be if done right compared to professional service?

Joe,

You have a lot of options, metalics are going to be MUCH harder than a solid like guards red. The '83 has a lot of work to get it to a place wherer you can do a metalic.

MacFreak and XSBoost have done some increadible work on their cars with time and effort. There have been people that have done rattle cans (spray can, jobs) and they look great! Red, white and black are sandable if you make a boo-boo.

Metalics ya can't. At least not so easilly.

Lisa say's that you need to paint it "Chalk Board Black" and just call it a day. I think that a nice white or cream would be a better option as far as solid colors go.

Good luck!!

Michael

i've painted numerous motorbikes and 2 cars in the past...one being an 83 n/a 944 from silver to black. its all in the prep work and go with a solid colour if its your first attempt. with a solid colour you can wetsand it carefully with a 2000 grit min paper and then compound...polish it out to a gleaming mirror finish with a paint buffer and pads....if you take your time you will be astounded to how good the results are....i plan to repainted my turbo sometime early next year and i'm so confident in my ability that it will be a show standard paint job.....bare in mind im not trained in body or paint work but like you i was curious and researched all about it....its easy when ya know how i guess!! best of luck with it !

I recently used a urethane (with catalyst, no clear coat is used ) to paint my 951 rear spoiler and have a few runs. Does anyone know if you can wet sanded these out with this type of paint?

yes you can......depending on how bad the runs are though, if the runs are light try a 1000 grit wet and dry paper and rub the runs out working up to 2000 grit paper to take the deep sanding scrathes out. if the runs are more like heavy sags then you need to sand the offending areas down and blow in some fresh paint. but yes.....runs are easily remedied with wet sanding....especially so with 2 pack paints...ie urethane.....have fun!

Thanks for the info 420. If I decide to re-spray, must the whole re-spray area be sanded to get the new coat to stick?

ok eurethane paint can be made in one stage or two or more stage paint systems so yours was single stage, i usually use two stage clear/base systems. If you paint is not a metallic then wetsanding it out is simple. There is a run file sold at many paint stores to file off the run then you wetsand and buff the area. IF you repaint the whole thing you still need to remove the run or itll be back. Yes if you repaint the whole thing then i would 500 wet dry the panel before respraying.

Default Rattle Can !!

Pay attention to the passenger side front fender. It came out looking like new glass- I swear... Even the Krylon Fuzion Red matched the OEM Spies-Hecker paint ALMOST(I say 98%). The three clear coats/wetsand was the key to the final finish. Like they all say, "its alll in the prep!"

I work at a paint & body, restoration shop. I am quite honestly amazed at the quality of some of the diy paint jobs I've seen on rennlist (havent seen any firsthand). If I were just starting out I think I would buy a book and or tape/dvd from a vendor (eastwood comes to mind) on the basics of auto painting. Good luck and happy painting!
