Default Lost coolant expansion tank cap (overheating)

I've managed to lose my expansion tank cap today. Probably forgot to put it back on after topping up the coolant (small leak on the radiator). I only noticed it when the warning line came on. I stopped immediately and waited for the engine to cool downand the warning light to go out. Managed to get one and a half liters in and stuffed a rag in to ge going again.

Got a replacement cap and at a repco and added two more liters of water. This got me home again. What I notice was the the fan no longer came on. It does now, with the extra water. I guess I'll need to bleed the system now. Is it likely that I've done some damage to the engine?

Thanks for any replies.

the fan may not have come on because there was no water on the censor to trigger its temp setting. if you saw the warning light for getting to hot, you may have warped the head. Just watch how the car acts for the next few days.

Doesn't sound good. Would that mean a leaking head gasket? So I'd be looking for oil in the water or vice versa?

Something to look forward to. No, I haven't got time to do jobs like that myself. Would I have stuffed my new waterpump as well? Tomorrow I'll replace the cap and bleed the system, I'll keep my fingers crossed. Thanks you for your replies.
