I don't know of what you could do, cut a new piece of foam? I would just get a used piece from a junkyard...can't cost too much.
By the way, do you still need parts from Todd? I'll be heading home next weekend.

the foam has nothing to do with the shifter play.
i removed my foam with no ill effects. no change in noise level or smell.

I will try to catch you before you leave. Been laid up for a few days, and have gotten just a little behind.
The foam would have to be heat proof. The heat from the car would melt most other foams. One of my 88's, sometime durning it's life, someone took off the heat sheild. It melted most of the foam aound the torque tube. Replaced the heat shield, but with the windows down, it pulls hot air up from under the car when moving. I figured that the foam also acts like a sealer, around the tunnel opening.

I replaced mine a couple of years ago. I believe I got it from Paragon.
I tried to find my invoice from Paragon and could not. Chuck (at Paragon) got the foam, probably from a dealer. Best I recall it was $30 to $40.

I don't really have a good solution to the problem, but I can say that all of the cars I've dealt with here (signature cars plus 3 more parts cars), the foam was in generally bad shape, like very deteriorated. I agree that having that heat sheild just above the torque tube, right below the shifter is probably a very important thing to have there (at least to me). I really don't know if there is such a thing as heat resistant open or closed cell foam. But I do know from my experience, that a LOT of heat (and a fair amount of noise) will travel up that shifter hole if you don't have the foam, AND that rubber gaiter boot in there. Your leather, or vinyl shifter boot will take a heck of a beating without all those parts there and intacked. Maybe you can source some decent open cell foam from a local fabric store, and cut out your own foam insulator? Or, maybe you can get a "good" enough used one. I really can' give ya general dimensions right at this moment, but if your really considering going after your own foam, and cutting it, I'll go take a pic, and general dimensions for ya.
I don't know, but I would think that spray foam, would be much to hard to use, and it doesn't have enough give to it to allow the shifter rod to move around down there. At least, that would be my thought. Good luck!

Thanks for the ideas, I agree that the spray stuff would be too hard. I believe that the heat etc fro it not being there is what dried and shrunk my last shift boot. One of employees suggested some carpet backing as he says it will resist the heat etc better but getting it to stay in there might be a challenge.

The best replacement foam can be found in most automotive headrest padding, sans covering. Use a razor blade, or X-acto knife to carve out the desired circular shape....namely like paring an Apple!

Part # is 477.711.239 but will have to wait until Monday to get a current price and availability. Remember, this will be quite a chore to replace - central tube must come out.
I'd be very careful using that expanding foam - maybe not so good for fire retard and may fume when heated (remember, catalyst is directly below).
