Where to buy rebuilt brake calipers or NEW pistons?
I'm asking for some recommendations where to buy:
1) new pistons for brake calipers for 1983 944 (same as 924 of similar year)
2) rebuilt calipers, but only if the rebuilt quality is high (pistons have no scratches, not painted inside the piston cavity, etc.)
If possible, please mentioned if you had a chance to inspect the pistons before installation.
Thanks.

Hi Stan,
944online.com offers rebuilt calipers and seal kits. I assume you are looking for an '83. It seems there are some differences between '83 FRONT calipers and '84+, so you may need to watch out for this. Maybe someone with more knowledge can fill in the blanks.
Although I've seen seal kits at numerous sources, I've not come across seperately sold pistons (maybe you can try a dealer, but I bet it will be lots of $$).
Another thought is I have bought 951 calipers for my car and have all my N/A calipers available. They are in good shape, no leaks, lots of pad, but not re-built. However, they are from an '87 and the fronts may not work, I don't know. But if you are interested, PM me, I'd be happy to let them go for very little (but I am in Canada, so the shipping might be a little higher EDIT: Doh! You are in Canada...).
EDIT: You can also find these calipers (used) on Ebay most of the time for pretty reasonable money.

I'll check other local stores for rebuilt units first. Following my experience with poor-quality rebuilt units, I'm a little hesitant to order from an unknown source, especially if it involves shipping over the border.

How about expanding your search to include a set of matching calipers from a car that is being parted out? Then do the caliper rebuild yourself. You're likely to have better luck and also save some money.

My latest Vertex catalog (at least two or three years old) lists rebuilt front calipers for $94 (US).
I would trust Vertex to provide a quality rebuilt caliper. I'm sure the other sponsoring parts places will offer similar deals (Paragon, Pelican, 944online, etc.)

I called Porschapart (Toronto), can get an old caliper for $60, but the guy says I can only exchange it if I don't open it (so I can't really examine it..).
They also sell remans done by a German company ARI for $130. Anybody heard of this company; is it reputable? I don't know if they install new pistons or not.

ARI is good - so is Nu-Geon. ARI is available from us for ~$78/each with $30/each core (US). Nu-Geon is out of stock right now, but they are a bit less... ~$40/each with $5/each core (US).

[EDIT - *Incorrect response - see below]
*Yes sir, they do. Here's what they have to say about it:
*Yes sir, they do. Here's what they have to say about it:
Each ARI caliper is completely disassembled and cleaned. All threads are inspected and then tapped if necessary. *New phenolic pistons, seals and bleeders are installed and all hardware is either replaced or remanufactured. Only then is each unit thoroughly tested and inspected for trouble-free installation and flawless performance.

Stan, looks like I jumped the gun with that answer. A phenolic piston is NOT used in the 944 (or any Porsche) so that statement does not apply. Phenolic is a high performance plastic that is used in many brake piston applications on domestic cars.
It appears that ARI does not replace the metal piston. Though, I'm sure they have a tolerance level for acceptable use. In any case, they are guaranteed to work.
