I need to replace the fuel pressure regulator in my 84 944 because it is leaking fuel into the vacuume line.
I am having some difficulty figuring out how to get it off. I have removed the supply hose underneath and loosened the fitting coming out the side leading to the rail. There is a nut underneath that seems to hold the FPR to the bracket which is welded to the rail but I cant get a wrench that large in there. So I pulled the rail off of the intake and now I have access to the nut but I can't turn it because there is no way to get a good hold of the top of the FPR so I can get the torque to loosen it.
I checked clarks garage but the instructions don't seem to apply to the early cars.(although they do show a picture)
Is there a trick to this?
Thanks,
Ben

The trick is to NOT twist the bracket on the square fuel rail as it will crack the rail. If the old FPR is bad hold it in the vice and use a crescent wrench on the large nut.
Remember: Don't twist the bracket welded to the really thin square tube/rail.

After I pulled the rubber fuel line out of the way, I was able to get the right combination of socket, adapter, and rachet to get to the nut from behind. When I tried to loosen it, the FPR began to turn with it. I took a wrench and held the fuel outlet to counter the forces and the nut finally broke loose. Hopefully, I did not damage the rail doing it this way. It looks like its o.k.
So the correct way would be to completly remove the fuel rail from the car and take it to a vice to clamp onto the top of the FPR?
I know that the FPR was bad, but even with the new FPR, it's been sitting for a year and now and I can't get it started, I dont think the fuel pump is working for some reason. After cranking for a while, I loosened the cap on the front of the rail and no fuel was there. I checked the fuel pump fuse(ok).
Should I be able to hear the pump running when I turn the key to on? Next, I will jack up the rear and check on the pump.
Thanks,
Ben

Thanks everyone for their help.
I found this link after the fact but I figured I'd post it in case someone is looking for tips in the future.
