Those are GORGEOUS!

Two Q's for ya...

1) How does that Storm Grey look compared to black? My car is black, so I'm wondering if this color would look close? Or should I go BLACK black in the center?

2) How much pressure do you apply while sanding?

Thanks...looks incredible!

Well, the storm grey is considerably lighter than black... it's more of a graphite or gunmetal color. I think in your position, I may go with the black centers.

as for pressure while sanding, it all depends on how well the casting marks/sand lines are coming off... if they're coming off really well, apply less pressure. if it's taking you three hours with the 320 grit, apply more. for the steel wool, I applied a LOT of pressure. I wanted that to be done, and consequently, it almost instantly polished it to a near-mirror finish. Good luck!

I would enjoy seeing those center caps in detail and would like to know your process for painting them. I have a set of freshly blasted PDs in my attic that I am considering messing around with but I won't bother if I can't make those center caps look stunning.

Give me a call sometime and we can get together and check out the cars, I actually have nothing going on today...303-902-0423.

Nice job on those wheels!

Thanks.......ANOTHER project added to my list
Those really do look nice, just the way I would like to do mine.
Thanks for the step-by-step, I'll keep that in the file for a winter/spring project.
Nice job!!!

That Aircraft Remover doesn't weaken the aluminum at all, does it? I've seen it on the shelf at Auto Zone, but never read the label. Just wondering what's in it...

hehehe. I'm the bringer of projects the aircraft remover does nothing to the aluminum except remove anything that was on it prior to applying the remover. it's safe for all metals, and quite frankly, the stuff is amazing. Anyway, I've gotta get to detailing. I'll talk to ya lata

Did the aircraft stipper really work that well? I used just about every kind of stripper available and I had a horrible time of getting the factory paint off my phone dials. It was a total PIA, I even "borrowed" straight acetone, toluene, and methylene chloride from the lab I work in and none of those was much more effective than the strippers. I'll have to try the stuff from autozone next time I suppose.

Not to steal the thread, but I've got five 16x7" phone dials and two 16x8" phone dials sitting around my house if anyone would like them for project wheels. (Don't ask why I have seven extras, its a long story).

Yes, the aircraft remover is AWESOME. you apply it with a paint brush or putty knife, or however you want to apply it, wait 5-10 minutes, come back, you'll notice the paint has removed itself from the wheel, but still (barely) stuck to it from the goop itself, then just scrape it off with whatever, either your finger, steel wool, paint scraper, etc. absolutely incredible stuff. leaves completely bare aluminum in it's wake... I've gotta strip one more wheel, I'll take pics when I do it (prolly next weekend)

I love your wheels. Hope you don't mind, but I'm copying your wheels with a spare set that I have sitting around. When I was looking for wheels I really liked the looks of the black Fuchs, but alas they don't fit my 87', so I settled for a nice set of refinished phone dials. If mine come out half as nice as yours I'll be thrilled.

Very nice!

damn! you beat me to it. This is the paint scheme I am going to (eventually) apply to the phones off of my parts car. Gonna go for a slightly more "black chrome" color paint, but yes!

Nice job Geoff, and I was gonna say to PS a pic to see the new color but since the tires are on the way....

Why not do the lips first and leave them masked until the wheel is completed?

BTW, walmart has the best price on the "aircraft remover".
