That is a very good point. I did not think about it, but Colorado is at pretty high elevating in general? It does make those compression numbers much more positive sounding.
I did not clue in on the dark smoke as well... I agree with Porschephile 924, that the guage fluctuations are likely a grounding issue. (I'm looking forward to hearing if the
Other likely culprits for hight oil consumption are the valve guide seals. If your plugs show that there is a lot of oil being burnt, this may be a reason. The air/oil seperator can also dump a lot of oil into the intake if those seals fail.
BTW, I am just an amatuer at all this stuff, throwing out thoughts to try to be helpful. As suggested above, you may want to consult with an expert who can look at all the symptoms in person and give you some recommendations before you embark on a lot of work.
