i was referred to this site (http://www.renegadehybrids.com/LS-1/...ersionkit.html) b/c ive been thinking about undergoing this ls1 swap onto the 944. i am planning soon b/c by next weekend ill be going home with either a 944 turbo or just n/a 944. both are priced nearly the same by the turbo model being about a $1500 more. at first, i went with the turbo model but now i am thinking of saving myself the $1500 and grabbing the n/a 944 and doing the ls1 swap. has anyone dealt with this company before?? their asking price for the ls1 kit is $2100 and you are able to add options for additional costs. i am not too familiar as well with the labor cost of this project. how much should i be expecting to shell out for this swap to go smoothly assuming the car itself is in great condition. oh yeah, does 944 tranny handle the ls1 power?? thanks for the help. if anyone else has any other refrences for this swap plz share. thanks in adv.

A $1500 difference between an N/A and Turbo? Thats either a time capsule N/A, or a oddly cheap Turbo...

That said, its better to buy a Turbo car for a swap. The price difference will be made up as soon as you nuke an N/A transaxle and have to get a turbo one anyway. The N/A transaxle grenades itself with N/A power, so forget V8 power. Nevermind better brakes, suspension, etc on the Turbo to start with.

A proper* conversion is expensive. Youre looking at that $2100 for the kit, the price of an LSx engine, the price of the 944/951, then the costs of whatever else in general maintenance like brake pads and such, fluids, whatever mods you might wanna do like clutch on the LSx, new fuel hoses, all sorts of stuff.

* = Looks good, no dremeled holes in the hood for a carbs air filter, no hacked together coolant hoses, no dremeled front end for a rad, etc. Some might disagree with me.

And do a few searches for say "conversion" or "engine swap". Theres been threads before on it, some of them get pretty....Ever seen two cats fight? Yeah. Lots of fur flying from both sides, so take things with a grain of salt, no matter WHO or WHICH forum it comes from or WHAT its about.

why did the mods decide to delete the duplicate of this thread that had been posted in...ie by me....no big deal


basically what I said in my other post is to go with the 951 as the tranny is stronger and you can get more for the parts that you swap out (turbo motor) and that renegade hybrids has been at this awhile and their quality/craftsmanship looks good

I was looking at this and came to the conclusion that an LS engine in a turbo would work just fine. The weight bias will be close and the brakes should be up to the task. There is a forum, I had it marked but I lost that computer, search hybrid. This project is not for the faint of heart and the issue you will want to check out is insurance. Lant & Co are probably the only insurers up here that will insure such a car.

What 'theedge' (Brian) said...Have plenty of green stuff on hand if you plan on having someone do the swap...You're going to need it. There is alot more to a 951 than a just a turbo. The Search function is your friend.

Just talked to Steve and he was able to do low 1:30s at Willow Springs. He got the turbo chassis to start with and is running the LS1 as a race car. Its not cheap if you do it right. I would imagine everything costing over $10,000 parts and labor not counting the cost of the car.

Jasse where in Chicago are you? If you need someone to give $0.02 on a car, I may be able to help out.
Also, I have a friend that was interested in doing such a swap so I did a fair amount of research. Turbo is really the only good choice, as the tranny can handle the extra power and the brakes can make you stop. Even if your wallet is thick, you will spend less in the long run with the added cost of the 951 as the starting point.

-i am from the skokie area. i see your at gurnee i am hardly up there except when the gf wants to go shopping at gurnee mills or i am at 6 flags. yeah, ill def. PM you if i suspect something shiesty from the seller. good looking out, much appreciated.

yeah the prices are odd but the n/a is pretty mint with a "freshly" rebuilt engine. as for the turbo no idea why its priced so low...i should run a carfax or something on it. as many of you suggested i will run a search but for now, i got that the turbo is the best chassis to do the swap and that the swap is $10,000 in labor alone. i was expecting more around $5000 but ill run a search to clarify that.

Not $10K in labor, about $10K + plus car == total price. It depend on what you can do yourself...

I have been looking into this a lot lately. I just don't know if could bring myself to putting in a motor from a company that I hate with a passion. It would be cool to not tell anyone what I did and then run my car at the track. I would love it. I just would love to keep it all Porsche or at least german. Why did Porsche make the 928 engine so damn wide!!!!!
