Default 968 motor in a 944?

As far as I can tell, the engine in the 968 is closely related to the motor in the late 944 S2. Before you read the rest you may want to just tell me if I am stupid and go about your business. I was wondering if you could possibly transplant the newer 968 engine with it's vario-cam and upgraded parts into a 944. Even with the frame set up for the 2.5 motor. If so would it take much frame modification? It did have vario-cam in it didn't it?

Yes, the 968 has Variocam.

The transplant has been done. Might want to do a search. I know there is even a project ongoing transplanting a 3.0 liter into a 924S....very cool.

Oh, and welcome to the forum.

It makes a great conversion if you can find a good donor car. The 3.0L usually go for big bucks, always more than a 944 Turbo takeout motor from what I've seen. After driving Bluecamaros S2 I have to admit that additional torque over the 2.5 NA is a real plus...but then again so is a turbo.

Why have either when you can have both?

You're only limited by time and money. The rest is up to you.

I can see it as sensible for a track car. Light, cheap consumables, throwaway chassis, and no big deal if it's a bit of a hack. For the street the 'sleeper' aspect doen't play all that well and the high cost of a decent chassis, motor, DME, clutch, trans and labor do not stack up against just buying a 951, S2 or 968.
You also have to part the car out when you are ready to sell it or lose a pile of money. Or another pile of money.

Here are the numbers:
(a decent 944) + ($5000 worth of parts) + (several months of labor) = a car worth $5000

Still fun if that's how you want to spend your money. _Lots_ of your money.

See 924S3 Update - it can be done. However, $5,000 is conservative, ask me how I know

Okay... Then can You bolt a vario-cam head onto a 944 3 liter block and save money? I would prefer to do that and replace the internals, then come out with a car prime for turbo-charging. If this is not possible I may just delay things for a while and suffer the 2.5 for a while. I wasn't sure if the bolt patterns would match up. I work with chevy small blocks on average, so transplanting parts is rather stress free.

For a 944 and 924S you have to add in the cost of a tranny, clutch and flywheel.

Not usually. A complete 968 motor will generally cost less than buying a 968 variocam head and a 3.0 bottom end seperately. Converting a 2.5l bottom end to 3.0l and adapting it to the 3.0L head is also very expensive. If you are trying to build a turbocharged variocam 3.0l motor, that's a 20K motor easily. Might as well buy a car with a variocam 3.0 to start with and build out of that rather than scrounge up parts and eventually have a $20K motor in a $4k car, and need a bunch of chassis upgrades too.
