NO Neon!!
I need a new cd/fm head unit for my Porsche 944 Everything I see is very "Neonish" with flashing neon like displays/buttons and would look out of place in my all black leather interior. Does anybody make a understated unit these days?
Thanks

nakamichi definately makes the least flashy looking stuff; eclipse used to make some nice ones, but it seems they have recently started making the bright flashing lights sort of thing....personally I still like Alpine, IMO the best head units, clean look, and not too distracting compared to just about everything else

Try Blaupunkt.
They were original equipment anyway. I have the Sacramento in mine. Sounds good and has very little if any "Neonish" light and it was inexpensive.
I am not sure exactly what you mean by "Neon" but I doubt you are going to find any shiny black head units with no color at all on it.
On a side nots when you post you should include some information on your car...year, model, etc..

I have a Blaupunkt in my early 944, and it fits the styling of the dash pretty well. It would look better in the new-style interior.

I have a later Blau Toronto. Best quality for a "newer" Blau, but not as nice as a good Alpine! Looks OEM though. Most mechanics say "stock radio, huh?" I guess that's an insult...?!

I had a newer model Blaupunkt in my 924S, the Casablanca CD51. I absolutley hated it, over heated all the time. Would constantly skip and give me CD errors on good discs. It would also randomly shutoff, likely due to the overheating problem.
Have since put in a nice Alpine MP3/CD deck. Not overly flashy, and have never had problems with it.

Alpines arent flashy, thats why I went with one. Mine does sort of stand out since its a blue display, but thats about it. The newer ones have 512 color backlighting, you can cycle through and choose what you want.

I've instaled the pionier ipod system and it is slick, not to mention the head units that it works w/t are very classy. In my car i actually have a jvc that has a small video screan on the front and shows album art of little video clips you can load onto it, its connected to a jvc 12 disc mp3 cd changer and for my needs holds plenty of music without getting into ipod.

love my jvc, very understated and matches great. I hated the last nakamichi unit i had, that thing was terrible for skipping and got very hot. Ive always like pioneer too but this latest is my favorite.

I had the same problem when looking for a new deck.
I chose the JVC DV5100... If you have an early 944, it has brushed aluminum that matches the brushed look on the car already...
It looks pretty good in my car, and it plays DVD's
