Default 944S2: Loss of power at running temps.

Hey guys, I've had a dozen problems with my 944S2 since I baught it, Spent over $5000AUD getting most of them fixed.

I now have the major trouble that once the car has been fully warmed up I lose power, the temp goes from just below the 1 third line to just above then on to half and all my power is gone, at this time I also get really bad engine noise coming through my radio. whats wrong? the car just feels really laggy and wont pull as hard as it should!

I also get a bad wering noise, after the car has been pushed, which sounds like dodgy tyres, but disapears once the clutch is depressed and the revs drop down to idle. I also get a similar noise which is more constant at 1500RPM, and takes much longer to go away, it sounds like its coming from the exhaust manifold or around there.

just replaced the o2 sensor, have a new DME relay, dizzy cap and rotor, leads and plugs. Dont know where to look next for this power loss... it seems to happen more constantly now and it never seems to pull as well as it used to. This is really irritating and i'm at the stage where I might just sell it any move back to jap crap where problems are easier and cheaper to fix.

Do a compression and leakdown test.

Check your engine ground, maybe run an extra ground wire to the chassis and battery as a test.

Wait! Don't give up just yet!

pilot1, the 944S2 is an extremely reliable 944. So reliable, that when something goes wrong, many times it's extremely difficult to locate the problem.

I've had the exact same experience as you describe, on again and off again. First right after I bought the car, and then for nearly two years until just recently.

The first time, it turned out to be the IGNITION CONTROL MODULE. It's unique to the 944S2, and consists of a potentiometer located right below the A/C drier bottle, mounted on the inner fender wall with a bracket. I assume on a RHD car, it will be on the passenger side front.

The pdf catalog on the Bosch Australia website here: Bosch Australia lists it as BIM 124 for the 944S2.

Replace this sucker for around US$75 and report back.

The second time, happened right after I had a headlight wiring upgrade kit installed. The mechanic forgot to clean the contacts to the Air Flow Sensor (big aluminum waffle shaped box in the front of the engine compartment) with dielectric grease, and reassembled the AFS with dirty contacts.

That was over a year ago, and I've had this problem on and off since then. Like you, I replaced a bunch of expensive parts, including the Fuel Pressure Regulator, Throttle Position Switch, O2 Sensor, bla bla bla. In the end, I was so desperate, I took the car to the local Porsche Service Centre and left it with them.

It took them nearly 2 weeks to figure out what was going on. They suspected the AFS and replaced it with a unit from another car. My car worked fine. I told them my AFS had been replaced barely 30K miles ago. They put it back in, correctly, and the car has run perfectly since then.

Give the Idle Control Module a try, and let us know how it goes!
