Default Early 944 ball joint replacement

I am redoing a few things on my '84 and figured I may as well do ball joints "while I am there". I can get some Moog brand ball joints at the local auto parts house. I know Moog is a fairly standard replacement item for domestic cars, but has anyone run these on a 944? Comments?

Scott, I haven't run them on a 944 (heck, mine hasn't run since it's been in my possession), but I have run them on other cars to good effect. It doesn't need to be made by some troll in der Schwartzwald to be good for these cars.

That said, given the peculiarities of the late control arm, I'd probably stick to something built by a company a bit more intimately familiar with these peculiarities.

That's an early control arm, as generic a joint as they come. Don't worry about the Moog.

for early ball joint replacement simply call paragon and have them send you two new ball joints $11 each or so and two new control arms $50 each or so. Total is about $120-140 and you have a completely new front end. These ball joints come a bolt in assemblies that are rivited in the stock arms. However the stock arms can crack over time, but very cheap to replace.

Hmmm, thanks for the info M758. I've been thinking of going to steele on my 86 daily driver. Never know when you'll find a curb in the snow and balljoints will be a 15 min job. A bent steele arm could get me home, a broken alum one will be a tow bill.

My control arms are seam welded and boxed, I don't think they will be breaking any time soon. I agree tho, Paragon has great prices on both ball joints and control arms and if you have some stock ones that are getting old, swapping them out is a pretty good idea.

I also like running these on '86 951's, and wish I could run it on my '87 as well. Its pretty darned strong and a heck of a lot cheaper than charlie arms. Of course, I am also too cheap to buy the "out of the box" Bilstein strut assemblies and build my own out of early strut housings...

The replacement of the balljoint - even the first time - is not bad.
First, remove the control arm (3 or 4 bolts)
Then all you have to do is grind off the rivet heads and pop them out with a punch and hammer, then bolt the new one in and you're ready to go.
