Default Compressor noise?

My a/c compressor makes a metallic spinning noise when the a/c is off. Haven't tried it with the a/c on yet because the system is low on refrigerant (not empty but enough so that it doesn't engage), and I'm reluctant to add more and see what happens because of the noises. Is it something that would go away if I recharged like the compressor just needing more oil, or am I looking at something more serious like the a/c clutch or whole compressor? It looks stock to me and I have no notes from the PO about the system ever being serviced between now and 7 years ago.

It's the clutch, most likely. I had the SAME problem--bought a rebuilt compressor off ebay. Rattled when it was OFF, sounding like metal on metal rubbing. So, my mechanic took the good clutch off my dead compressor, and used it on the new (rebuilt) one. Quiet ever since!!

The clutches are replacable, and available as a replacement part.

Good luck!

Where can they be found? I've been looking online for a while without any luck. Or is this something really common that Auto Zone or somewhere like that would have? Is it easy to replace without damaging any seals on the compressor?

The clutch bearing is bad. Had this same issue with my 951.

Any ideas on where to find this bearing or clutch? I still haven't been able to come up with anything online. There are a couple of a/c licensed guys at work that I know, maybe they're in the know?

Check with paragon or one of the list's other sponsors. They often have parts not listed in their site.

Or just take it apart and check the bearing, then go to a bearing shop for a replacement.

Thanks! I had no idea that they were a universal sort, now I just need these long days at work to settle down so there's time to get under the car again. I really don't mean to disappear for days at a time, the schedule comes and goes.
