Default In Praise of the 944 Footwell

The more I drive other cars, the more I appreciate the legroom and footroom of the 944. Not only as the driver, but also as the passenger. Recently I was the passenger in my own 944 and it suddenly came to me like a flash: I could stretch out my legs, I could position my size 12's up against the firewall, and I could even move my feet around quite a bit. Why was I so astounded? Because I had just spent 22 hours on a road trip in my spinner's 4Runner wedged in like a sardine. My toes kept jamming up against the heater core; it must have been designed for midgets. Then the next couple of weeks I was the frequent visitor in the passenger seats of a 2004 Sequoia, 2003 Mustang, 91 Miyata, 2004 Crown Vic, 2000 Audi A4 and others. The whole time I'm in those cars my mind was wondering, do the designers ever sit in the passenger seat? Do they have feet bigger than size 6? What a difference between those so-called modern cars with so-called attention to user interfaces and a 20 year old 944!

Haha, I was thinking the same thing the other day. My dad was driving my 944 and I was a passenger and I noticed how comfortable it was!

Yeah as a passenger the legroom is amazing, but don't you guys think the driver's legs are kinda cramped? If I position my seat so my legs are nice and comfortable, I can barely reach the steering wheel or shifter. If I position it so I can reach everything comfortably, my legs are all jammed up against the bottom of the steering wheel. I think it's difficult to find the right compromise between legroom and arm reachability.

I love the fact there is a great deal of room! I have a smaller steering wheel (Dino) in the 84' and I like it much more that the larger stock wheel. I am 6'5" with a 15 shoe and people often ask me how I fit in there, my reply is: "with ease and comfort". My seat is not even all the way back either. Both the driver and passanger sides are comfy for me. Being an early model it has less legroom that the later 944's. Newer cars with their cab-forward design are too cramped!

I sort of wish the series had a telescopic steering wheel. I also find that my 'optimum' leg position puts me way to far away from the steering wheel. I however have got into the habit of sitting very close to the wheel. I feel i have more feel over the clutch and more control over the steering wheel.

I have changed my steering wheel to a slightly smaller diameter Momo. Still my left knee hits the bottom of the wheel, not a huge deal as i have gotten used to it but one of the small things i would fix.

Theres more passenger foot space in a 944 than in a new Chevy 2500. I almost chucked when I rode in my bosses 2500 the first time. The heater core/AC exchanger was over my ankles, my feet were kinda behind it.

The passenger seat is so much better in 944s for so reason. I liked letting my friends drive the car.

Yes, they are surprisingly roomy!

haha, I thought you were going to say that you got some nitrous (since that seems a major topic lately) and that it didn't blow the welds on the passenger footwell, yo.

Yeah, these cars are comfortable...

Jon, when I swapped steering wheels on the 924S, the 3 spoke I'm using now came out of a 87 944. It is actually 1 - 1 1/2" closer to me due to the spacer difference. I like the change, it's a bit more of a finger reach to the stalks, but I got used to it quickly.

I have always appreciated how this car fits me.

FWIW it took a few months of daily driving at the beginning to find a graceful way in and out of it tho.. I get a kick of letting someone sit in it and falling out on the way back out..

I also find the passenger seat is more comfy. Know why? Because my driver seat has 107K miles, and my passenger seat has about 3k miles! Wish I could switch the seats!

Either way, I am 6'1", and never have the seat all the way back. Tons of front room (and zero rear room) in these cars! More than in my 2001 Taurus!

When getting in and out of the driver's seat you just have to be careful when the e-brake is engaged

My friend's hit their backs above the doors getting out haha, can't stand up too early, you've got to crawl away from the car for a few ticks.
