From the turbo side of the 944 range, I can tell you. You are DEAD wrong.

The insurance would be mine, because in the rare event I got in an accident, she wants me to have to pay, not her.

njwilser- where is george b, and how big is his lawn?

mavfan- I'd rather go for a silver '84 (see sig)

serge944- I am mechanically inclined, I'll be going into my 2nd year at BOCES for auto tech.

MPD47+tifosiman- my mom wants carfax, I'd go for just a PPI (I have to do that too...)

I hope this addresses some of your concerns.

Keep it coming- don't be shy

Exactly. I went into a ditch with my car, totalled it. Took insurance for it and it never showed up on carfax. That was 6k in damage and it did not show up.

My car has some sort of rear end damage... I didnt notice it because I hadn't seen a million 944's before to know the very suttle differences. I had it at a body shop when the owner (who races 944's) clued me in. If you are really concerened about vehicle accidents or accidental damage, you should have a body specialist look at it.

I just swapped a fender from another car and the car is being repainted. If I decided to have them rip off the new fender and respray it from as far as the edge in the engine bay, it would be very hard to tell if it wasnt the original fender.

The accident damage to be concerned about is anything that has been repaired near the front of the car. There is a LOT that can be messed up in that area. From the rear of the front fender all the way backward, there is much less cause for concern.

Is your mom pretty well off? If not, this isn't the car for you.

Maintenance can cost bundle, so know that going in. Lots of young guys here have lost their shirts, and they don't hang aroubnd to talk about it.

I've lost my shirt, and I think the washer ate it... it just vanished, and I'm not afraid to say it...

I bought a 1984 944 when I was 21. Be aware, YOU WILL SPEND $2000-$3000 per/year to keep it in good running condition. If this isn't a problem for you, welcome to the Porsche family. If I were you, I'd wait and save for something newer and nicer, perhaps with a turbo. Let us know what you do. Good luck!

Ok man, one word of advice... and it's goin for me too...

NEVER SAY DIE!

if you want a 944, get a 944. if you learn an important lesson, great. if not, whatever.

Me, I'm looking to get into pro racing... I'm gonna train, I'm gonna spend a LOT of money (more so than a 944, that's for damn sure), and I know I'll learn a lesson or two, but damnit, I'll get it.

I dont think you realize what you are getting into here. If you want any of your money to go towards other things, dont get a 944.

Pricing varies depending on where you live. 944's in the metro-NY area tend to go for a bit more than other areas, why i have no idea. For example you will see most 'ok' condition 944's go for as much as $4000-5000 in the local paper, however i really have no idea if those cars actually sell at that price.

For your reference, here were the details on the 944 i bought.

-'87 944 8v n/a
-D90 Wheels
-Guards red paint, faded badly (however, it cleaned up well with alot of work. hood needs repaint)
-Perfect interior, no dash cracks, perfect seats.
-Strong running engine. 60k miles on car. Oil leak at rear main seal
-Non working a/c (needed recharge...seems to be holding the charge)
-No previous maitenence records
-Two owner car, first owner was PCA member until around 2000.

Seller wanted $4000k. My father who was with me at the time worked him down to $3150. I feel it was a decent buy i think, nothing seriously wrong with it. Mind you, the owner i bought the car from knew NOTHING about these cars.

In required and "could use it" maitenence, i have about $1000 into the car. That includes...

-Timing belt, waterpump, balance belt, alternator belt, PS belt, rollers, and front oil seals.
-fuel pressure regulator
-air filter, fuel filter

Mind you, i do all of my own work. Having a mechanic do this work would cost considerably more. Take it from a kid also (i am currently 20). These cars are very expensive the first year unless you have good maitenence records to follow. Would i recommend to another teenager to buy a 944? Unless you are mechanically inclined, have a steady decent paying job and occasional help from your parents to help you if you get in a bind for parts.....no, do not get this car yet.
