Default Coolan question

I need to fill up my coolant resevior and was quoted $44 for 1 gallon of porsche coolant. **** that. What is a safe alternative that I can get at an autoparts store? I believe it needs to be phosphate free correct? Anything else I should look for? Any brands better then others?

i've been debating this also for my 928. used to be able to get Xerex G05 or something like that which was phosphate and silicate free. last time i went to the store, they said Xerex was bought by Peak. now the only Peak antifreeze i see says it's good for any car. doesn't mention anything about phosphate or silicate free. i may just go with it anyhow.

when i went to buy antifreeze - same thing - all say safe for all radiators - none said "phosphate free".

i used 1 water wetter
1/3 antifreeze
2/3 distilled water

runs nice and cool.

It is the one with the black container. It says on the back that it is phosphate free-and it is cheap too.

Do you think that all anti-freeze has been now regulated so that they all are phosphate and silicate free?

As for the Peak, that's what my shop uses, and infact, what I topped off the expansion tank with the other day.

I don't know whats what when it comes to anti-freeze. But!........I know if it doesn't SAY phosphate free on the label.........I don't buy, or use it. Whats this "silicate free" crap? Where did this come from? I never saw anything in a TSB or FSM, that said anything about this, BUT.......it DOES talk about it being "phosphate free". I always thought "silicates" were a good thing to have in there anyway. "Phosphate free", mainly for our "crappy" mineral spiked water.

$44.00 a gallon...............NO WAY........NO HOW!......would I do that!
Zerex GS05. Thats what I use. $12.00 a gallon. STILL to much, if ya ask me. I just haven't gotten off my butt long enough to find a cheaper alternative, that I WILL trust.

I just bought some Prestone extended life antifreeze/coolant. It says all over the container that it's good for all makes and models, and that it safely mixes with any color coolant. No mention of phosphates but on the back it says it protects aluminum and all other engine metals... Sounds good right? Also it says it contains ethylene glycol, diethylne glycol, and something with sodium. All safe for our engines?

sorry, i may have made up the silicate free thing, but according to autozone, xerex as a brand, no longer exists. i'm gonna go with the peak or prestone, not sure which.

the dex-cool stuff does say phosphate free and silicate free on the bottle, but i don't think it mixes well with the other stuff.

I broke a radiator drain plug so I went to pepboys and found a mazda one that just happend to fit and it was only about $3. As far as coolant goes, I use whatever is laying around and mix it with tap water.
