One reason to change it is by how the clamp looks that holds the hose on the water pump. It's all nice a rusty. Belts can look good but aren't up to spec. You heard this before and will hear it again CHANGE IT. Check out the rollers and tensioners while you are at it.

This LINK will take you to a great source for some 944 tools. The Arnnworx "full" tool kit ($98) includes the flywheel lock, pin tool, thin wrench and "Krikit" tool and will allow you to get those balance shaft sprockets off. Bruce also has a new tensioning tool (top of page) which looks like a good middle ground between the basic Krikit and the Uber-Deluxe P9201, although I have not tried it. I, and many others, have ordered and used Bruce's tools and they work great.

There is also some good info about using the tools on that site.

If you have not already found it, Ckark's Garage is a great 944 how-to site.

Welcome to the list!

Thanks!

Thanks for the motivation guys, I finished up the timing and balance shaft belts a souple days ago and everythings running fine. Compared to my old e30 the '44 is a much easier car to work on. Also I've got both the timing covers off right now, I plan on leaving them that way, anyone have any good reason not to?

YAY! another one converted to NO BELT COVERS BIATCH!

believe me. there are more reasons to leave it off than there are for leaving it on.
