Default Looking at an 89 S2...

Read up on it here: http://www.craigslist.com/nby/car/87384312.html

It seems to be pretty well taken care of, the owner sent me some pics and it is in really nice shape. I've requesting maintenance history on several items..but what should I be looking for? Are the S2's more or less troublesome than the Turbos maintenance wise? If its something I want to drive alot, is it a bad idea?
Thanks a bunch!

The S2's are less problematic than the 951s as a rule. You do need to make sure the camshaft chain tensioner has been taken care of though. Other than that, typical 944 stuff. I don't know where you live, but Phoenix, Or is 20 min from my house. I'd be happy to take a look at the car if you'd like. I currently own a 951, and I've had a 944s (the 2.5L 16v) and another 951 in the past. Keep in mind that at 16 years old, any car is going to start needing some maintenance to keep it reliable.

When I bought mine, these were the things I was looking for:
- Timing/ bal. shaft belt history
- Oil leaks and where
- Odometer gear replacement (Reasoning if it was replaced, how long did it go in between?)
- Tensioner replacement
- Cam chain tensioner replacement
- Records!

I then went through all the rest like paint/ interior etc. It sounds nice, you should post the pics! Contrary to popular belief, it is not inherent that a Porsche leaks oil.

Thanks for the offer gmsracing! I actually live in the Lake Tahoe area, so it is a ways away from me. If things progress I might take you up on the offer. I was not under the impression that an oil leak was inherant of the car So I am curious as to where its coming from. Anyways, here's the pictures!

Thanks again everyone.

Oil leaks could be minor or they could be a pain to deal with. And expensive. The oil pan seal or the rear main seal comes to mind for pain in the butt gaskets to replace. At least with the S2, you don't have to remove the cross-over pipe and the whole intake manifold system to replace the oil pan gasket like you do in a 951. I'd suggest a local shop for a PPI, but I'm new to the area and I haven't had any experience here yet. The car looks pretty clean, but you can never tell with pictures. It looks like the passenger front wheel is curbed up a bit though. Drop me a PM if you'd like some help checking it out.

Don't forget to check the motor mounts! BTW, I love my S2!
