Default Starter/electrical problem

Over the past couple of days when trying to start my 86 951 the starter will not engage, no clicking noise, no sound at all. I can get it to start after a couple of tries and when it starts, all the gauges in the including speedometer will not work. Tried some of the other electricals and have working fan for heat and air but air conditioner does not kick on, radio works, sun roof switch does not work. All door locks and window switches work fine. I have checked the battery connections all are tight, check the ground to the started and can find no problems. Anyone have any ideas?

Did you check the fuses? They could also be corroded.

Just to follow up on this, I check the entire fuse box and all fuses are good and do not appear to have any crud on them. I have ordered a new ignition switch and will replace the old one. I do have a question, would the ignition switch cause the problems I am having with the instrument panel guages not working? Do I have another seperate issue that I need to be concerned about?

When my ignition switch didn't work all my gauges wouldn't work either, sometimes jiggling the key would make it come up but it would go out as soon as I turned it to the start position. It went out kinda suddenly too.

Tom,

Thanks for the info. I just have to wait for the new switch to get here so I can install it.

Same issue on Dad's 86 951, new ignition switch, no go. We're looking into it further. Please let us know what you find, I'll do the same. I've also put 3 different starters on it that were all good and still did the same thing.

OK, dad's car is good. The initial no nothing problem was either the white two pin plug at the brake booster or the 10ga wires that go to the main battery terminal at the battery. Dad replaced the 3 or 4 loop ends on the positive that feed the ignition switch and the car power. He also cut the connector out and used butt-crimp connectors to replace the two pin plug. He said he couldn't get a good connection and beleived it to be a possible problem. With that done, we then encountered the solenoid clicking but it not cranking intermittently. This was a new problem that we had not encountered before. The culprit there was a significantly corroded terminal on the starter on the battery lead(the large stud). We were going to clean it but opted to put the reman starter that we had previously swapped off the car. We could have just cleraned the connection tho for a cure as well. Good luck, hope to help
