It's not "Just a Valve cover" . It is the housing that holds the cam. You are removing the whole cam, lifters as well. good luck!

I've just started this.

Did you findit necessary to disassemble the cam housing (timing belt sprocket and cover) in order to prep and paint them or did you leave it assembled?

the intake on the other hand... what a PITA, im looking for any tips, ive went over all the areas i possibly could with a diegrinder and little surface blending pads, and im down to elbow grease, but it just doesnt seem like its ever going to get done -

maybe ill start looking on ebay for one thats already done

Yeah.. lots of patience, probably took a couple hours just to mask the areas in betwene the letters.
some advice to make yours come out better than mine.

let your under color paint dry for a few days at least before masking...
try not to have pooled up areas of paint in between the letters cuz it will just fall off
tear thin strips of tape... use a screwdriver and lightly smoosh it down flat in between the letters, and use a razor blade to cut around the base of the letter. Careful not to push down or drag the screwdriver too much as you will loosen the paint below the tape and then pull it off when you remove it.

Forgive my ingorance, but if you have to remove the entire cam with the housing how are you supposed to reinstall without worrying about your timing being off??? I realize you could mark the cam position before pulling the housing, but is there some other way to assure proper timing upon reassembly?

I did the tape the other way. I sanded the raised letters then taped them and used an Exacto to cut the tape around the letters. Sprayed the cam assembly Ford red (off the car), pulled the tape up and then hand painted the letters silver.

The intake is just painted with the silver high temp as well.

The cam has a notch that aligns with a notch in the rear distributor housing. The cam itself has a woodruff key so the gear can only be put on one way. if you make sure you lock the flywheel , you just reassemble with it aligned with the notch and then install the belt properly.

Here is shots of my camtowers. I sanded and polished the letters using 3M Rolo-locs on a die grinder then put a thin coat of vaseline on the letters to keep the paint from sticking...worked like charm! The red on my NA is Duplicolor Ford Red
Then the blue on the Callaway is a Polyurethane which took a few days to dry.

I used Duplicolor 400F high heat paint on mine. The color is Ford Red (Hold on, lemme go get my flame suit) and clearcoated it with high heat clear also from duplicolor 400F. Be sure you clean surfaces thoroughly using Brake Cleaner first, Simple Green after and water. You will want to mask off the smooth metal surfaces where the cam tower bolts to the head, rear and front cam seal surfaces. When you paint, apply 2 coats of paint every 15 minutes. Clear coat it in 30 minutes.
