Default Fuel system issues? What is it?

My 87 944 NA has been acting up lately.

The last few times I've tried to start it, nothing, just the starting trying to turn the engine over, over and over again. Before this, while driving, before the engine was warmed up, occasionally while idling the engine would just die, which it hasn't done before, and while accelerating it would sometimes lose all power, like I had taken my foot off of the gas, even though I hadn't. All of these problems are only when the engine is cool, once it warms up, it's fine. Well, except that I can't start it anymore.

A friend of mine thinks it's the DME relay, I thought at first it was an old, clogged fuel filter. I was just curious what everyone here thinks.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, the relay is a lot easier to replace than the fuel filter (although for all I know the fuel filter is 18 years old, so I may want to replace it soon anyway.) Bottom line, I wanna' be able to drive again...help!?

Thanks a lot,
--Mike

Try pulling the two sensor connectors apart at the rear of the intake. Spray with CRC contact cleaner and plug them back together. The sensor side connector gets brittle and makes bad contact making a very annoying intermittent problem, including dying for no reason at all. The DME relay is obviously the first thing to check but don't over look those sensor plugs.

Try purging the fuel rail, it would at least give you an idea how much fuel is getting to the front of the car. I have a DME relay F/S from a parts car if you want to try that, but it may just be the filter. Check out Clark's for ideas.
