Default OT - VW New Beetle clutch job

A friend of mine's wife's '99 Beetle has just spat up its clutch and transmission apparently. Actually, the clutch seems to have failed because the rear main seal blew out.

Anyone familiar with these cars? How hard is it to change the clutch, how much should a mech charge, how much are parts? How much would a tranny rebuild cost, or a used one?

He is a complete novice when it comes to working on cars (I think maybe he could replace a battery, maybe), but says he'd like to learn. I'm vaguely entertaining the notion of offering to "help", but I'm not interested if this is like a 1-pc crossover 951 clutch job

Thanks.
