Default Hot ashtray???

Okay, I was driving home last night and was poking around in my ashtray for a couple tokens and they were more than a little toasty warm...they were uncomfortably HOT. I continued on home, and 20 minutes later everything was cool to the touch again!! What the heck could cause my ashtray to heat up like that? And why did it suddenly cool off? No change in driving...it was all highway at 70-80 mph in 80 degree weather.

Any ideas?

Steve

Seems to be normal. I know it happens in the 924S and Dale's 944 was the same way on the drive home from 944Fest on Sunday.

Some attribute this to the cat getting hot and the heat pushing into the cabin- this seems to make sense to me - again, it's just a theory that has worked it's way to me and seems to have merit.

Pretty sure it's from the lamp.

Another good possibility- if it was only during night driving. The ashtray lamp is off when the interior lights are off.
Mine gets very warm all the time.

Couldn't be the lamp...it was all daylight driving. And when I say hot, I mean HOT. Much hotter than some small light could cause. And of course the kicker is the whole thing cooled off while I was STILL driving on the highway!! Weird, eh?

I suspect location plays a key role.....
The lamp can contribute, but probably not enough. Hold the bulb in between your fingers when it is on...how hot is that...not as hot as an easy bake oven....

Only if it was a dying bearing in the torque tube.

My ashtray gets toasty as well, as does the shifter and boot. Its the cat converter. No heat/warmth when I ran an open downpipe.

I agree Brian..

Lets talk Torque Tube for a second. I assume you have had this bearing problem by your statement.

Any noticeable noise associated with this? perhaps a RPM related squeal?

I would imagine if it was a torque tube bearing it would get hot, make a fair amount of noise, and not cool down until I stopped. Right?

Not only that, it would take some time to cool down as well, as they torque tube has some mass to it and therefore some thermal intertia as well.
