Question Tire pressures?

My owner's manual specifies 29lbs up front and 36lbs for the rear. Does anyone actually use these pressures? I have 195 60 15 up front and 205 60 15 in the rear.

I used the factory pressures before (215 60R15), but for aggressive driving it will eat the outsides of th efront tires. I currently use 32 psi up front. If you go very agressive, e.g. autoX, you may want to consider 42psi up front, but I wouldn't use so much for street driving.

Is there a reason you dont want to use the stock settings?

the 29 psi front is too soft for crisp cornering.

Because the tires are really hard and all those cracks, potholes, expansion joints and such are a pain.

I think the recommendations also reflect 20 year old tires. Rock hard to get handling.

The suspension on my cars are stiffened for track use (Not extreme, though) and I use 32 front and 34 rear. Less for track use.

I respectfully disagree. For daily driving it is more than acceptable. On the 944 the car originally came with V rated tires, the sidewall was more stiff and turn in was wonderful. Since most people, with the stock tire sizes, have long since stepped down to H or even T (I shudder at the thought) that may contribute to what you are describing.

Same applies to the 924. It was shipped with 195/65VR15s. The original poster is not using the stock tire size and I am 99% positive he isnt using the stock speed rating.

Since we are dealing with non-norm sizes and speed ratings (the front tires are too short overall), my suggestion would be to start with the stock settings and adjust from there. I would not go above 36psi on a daily driver.

Because the tires are really hard and all those cracks, potholes, expansion joints and such are a pain.
What tires are really hard? The car will ride fine at 29 and 36, it was designed around those air pressures.

I think the recommendations also reflect 20 year old tires. Rock hard to get handling.
You could and I will argue that for 90% of cars the tires that came on it were of a higher quality than the 50th set of replacement tires they are currently riding on. They were V rated and 60 (944) and 65 (924) series, they were not rock hard. Unless you are still using the original tires, if so, they are probably bricks at this point

As for old versus new and OEM versus replacements, I'm going on what I've heard. Makes some sense as well. 45psi is awfully hard and really bangs the car. I don't think it is needed with stiff sidewall "summer" tires..

Regards!

Ride will always be better with a lower air pressure setting, to a point. The stock figure is 29 and 36.

Who said anything about 45psi? I dont see it mentioned anywhere.

yeah, I wrote 42 psi front for autoX, not street driving, see my post; and don't quote numbers out of the context

I was worried that 29 in the front would cause the tires to fall off in a corner!? Seems way low, no?

And I forgot--what does using 34-36 all-around do to the handling--adds more oversteer vs. the stock air pressures?
