Same thing happened to me, though only the face of the phonedials were done. The center caps were beyond cleaning (those I'll have to buy separate). I took two rims and wet sanded them down to smooth with 250 and 400 grit paper.

I sent one out for powdercoating and primed and painted (Wurth's silver) and clear coated the second. The second looks pretty close to original though the powdercoated one, which came out great originally, has some faint black spots bleeding through.

I did not put a lot of time into the sanding and painting of the second one.

As I am looking at a 911 presently and have twists on my 944 now, these may be available. I'm in MASS. I will try and take some pics. Send me a pm with your email address.

As far as refinishing the wheels...there are sprayable fillers such as FeatherFill which will help you smooth the painted surfaces with MUCH less time and trouble; then you can send it to a wheel refinish shop to have the machined surfaces redone, including the bead seats. Good luck, m8.

I can't post pics, 1) because I don't have my digital camera with me and 2) I would be too embarrassed. As most of you know, I just bought an all orginal 89 944 N/A. The clear had wore off the wheels over the years, and I was going to lacquer thinner wipe and repaint them. They were original 1989 15" phone dials. We decide to light aluminum oxide blast or bead blast the fronts only. So my uncle takes them to the guy and they SANDBLAST ALL 4 WHEELS and ALL 4 aluminum center caps. Not just the fronts, but EVERY SINGLE INCH OF SURFACE AREA on both the wheels AND the center caps. Aside from needing paint the wheels were 9.9 out of 10.

Now I have wheels that feel like 100 grit sandpaper all over, beads and all and I AM SCREWED - my uncle thinks powdercoating the wheels and centers will fix it and I doubt they will even hold air or be safe to drive on if they get powdercoated. I am almost embarrassed to be making this post, please someone who knows about wheels give me some guidance, as this means I am definitely not going to be driving my 44 for a while. I know I sound **** but the car I bought was very very clean and meticulously cared for. I doubt I will be able to get wheels as good as the originals that came with the car. And I am out 4 perfect center caps too, as they look and feel just like the wheels do.

I would appreciate any advice on fixing my current wheels or if anyone knows of a good 87+ 15" set in RI, MA, CT or the New England Area or wherever. I really would like if they are original off another 89, in the meantime I have to yell at my uncle tomorrow and explain to him why he is gonna buy me new wheels. Any reasons that are legitimate are also appreciated.

- Mike

Yes.. how time flies...

Thank you Tom, I now have to think about what I myself have done in the time between the original post, and now since several people are still offering the OP their wheels...

Do tell more about the mullet mobile!

Yeah, Maybe get the wheel mounted on a spindle and turn the wheel while you block the area out with sandpaper.

/Yeah well anyways that is how I plan on refinishing my Fuchs.
