Default Valve Lifters... aka Cam Followers

im rebuilding the head on my car. 5 of my lifters are bad, so i have a few questions...

1 - can lifters be machined or rebuilt to good operation again
2 - is it possible to put in used one in good condition
3 - anyone have a good source for new ones, like less than $40 or less

any assistance appreciated,
thx,
-john

I was about to replace 2 of mine recently, until I learned that 2 of them will feel weak because of the oil having already been pushed out of them. I hear that new OEM ones are not up to par with the actual originals. It would probably be best to throw in some good condition used lifters. As far as I know they can not be rebuilt

sorry one more, and thanks pearldrum ^^

4 - can the good ones be put back in any order? Im only asking because the fellow who helped me disassemble my engine suggested against it. But I wasnt sure to what seriousness. He mentioned that they wear into their cam housing guides and its good to put them back in order. Is it relatively safe to put them back in out of order, or put in used ones?

thx again

It would probably be fine, they may wear quicker though. I know in the haynes manual is says to make sure that they go back in order though.

How do you tell if they are good or bad? I have mine out and 2 of them feel a little soft while the others are rock solid.

The soft ones are bad. The stiff ones are in good order.

Also, to worsen the condition, I got my lifters a bit out of order, well.. they are in order, but im not sure which one starts lifter #1 :/ They seem like such a perfect piece of metal, like they would be unable to break in at different levels, but im guessing theres a good reasone someone has said it. Its just not what i wanted to hear

2 of them will feel soft! I learned this about 2 weeks ago. 2 of the lifters will feel soft because currently the engine has pushed the oil out of them. They should not need replacing. When my engine was at TDC lifters 3 and 7 felt soft.(from the front of the engine back) It may be different on yours though.

lol, omg, I took the head off my car and manually turned the pistons, so TDC on my car has been wiped off the map... meaning, I have no clue which 2 of the 5 weak lifters i have would have been emptied. On the other hand, mabey I can somehow force oil in each one and see which ones hold their stiffness?

try viagra to increase stiffness, but if they stay stiff for more than 4 hours better call a mechanic.

Either way, they should both be the same kind of valve. Like both of mine were intake (I think?) That should help you some.
