Valve Lifters... aka Cam Followers
#16
You should try your best to keep them in order because they wear with the cam lobe...when you mix them up you run the risk of accelerated wear of both the lifter and the affected cam lobes. On a mostly stock daily driven car, it's probably no big deal though. I wouldn't worry too much about it. I've mixed them up before on other cars and nothing bad came of it.

I'm pretty sure the lifters can be bench tested. I think they immerse them in oil and use a press to pump them up and monitor what pressure it takes to bleed them down (or something like that). You might check with a few local auto machine shops. Even if they don't have a spec for these lifters, it should be possible to get a relative feel for which ones are weak.

This thread really shouldn't be used for NA 944. Lindsey was experimenting with radical lift and duration. Stock lifters will not cope, no matter when they were made.
To check lifters:
-hit the oil feed hole on the side with 45 psi from a rubber-tipped
compressor blower
-if hydraulic assembly is now rigid, the lifter is good
