Default Opening in clutch housing for TDC mark?

Hey guys, for the life of me..I can't find this

http://www.clarks-garage.com/graphics/tdc1-1.jpg

The opening in the clutch housing for the TDC mark...when I take the timing cover off..will there be any markings to tell me? I am doing the rest of the removal to do a belt job..but wont take off the t-belt until I find TDC...

I also did the wooden dowel method. toook out spark plug #1..put my wooden rod in there and turned motor until it was at its highest point..I'd still like to see "OT" tho

can anyone help?

thanks
Mike

Can't you just line up the TDC with the cam? There is a clear notch undre the distributor housing.

Very Cool. I was hoping for something like that

all other cars I've worked on..just brought the motor to TDC using the marks on the crank pulley and then verified by making sure the cam was @ 12 oclock

I couldn't see the mark on flywheel thru the hole do to yrs of crud. I used the groove in the flywheel on the bottom of the bell housing. you line it up with the slot in the bell housing. then checked the timing mark on the cam pulley. I then removed the starter and put the flywheel lock in. It worked for me. Maybe someone else has another way.

Hey;

The mark on the flywheel can be hard to see. You need to be slightly off the mark to see it, as the tab on the bell housing obscures your view if it is lined up perfectly. Bring it close with the cam mark, varify, then set perfectly and lock the flywheel.

Nothing wrong with your dowel trick either, although it's unnecessary.

There are two rotations of the cam for every single rotation of the crank. You could always just line them up later. But I find it best to have everything on TDC from the beginning.

Tyler, sorry i am working on this the first time and not quite steady on my feet about it.

It didn't matter much since I was taking the headoff and turning the crank afterwards anyway, but, for putting it back on, would I have to put the flywheel on, line TDC up on the flywheel, then lign the tdc on the camshaft, and then put the cam tower on?

You've got that backwards. Two rotations of the crank for one rotation of the cam.

ALWAYS line up the cam first. The line on the flywheel should be in the window at that point. If you only use the flywheel you could be on the wrong stroke.

[edit] fat fingers added an "e" to cam

huh? Everytime I've lined up TDC I have noticed that the cam spins two times everytime the flywheel TDC mark comes around...?

Yes, you would need to do this when you reassemble it.

Hm.

This may be the dumbest question yet...but where is the tensioner I use to relieve tension on the alternator/Power steering belts???

The alt/ac belt is tensioned at the very bottom. There is a double-bolt thingy that tensions the belt by pushing the a/c compressor away from the crank. I have no idea about power steering.

You must have a 1/2 stroke engine then.

The flywheel mark will line up twice for each full rotation of the cam.

Hey, I brought #1 to just about TDC at least 10 times (cant verify TDC for sure as I'm still using the dowel method..when it stops going up and before it starts going down is T DC) I cannot see the marks on the flywheel. Is the problem that I am using a mirror to look? A mirror and light of course.. I would go completly under, but my mom is very paranoid about the car on jackstands (the jackstands ARE on the framerails..) and things are easiest when she isn't pissed

Tommorow AM I'll go back under and try and verify TDC before removing cap/rotor and the belts...but I gotta get it done tommorow else I'm walking the 14 miles to/from work...walking home the night the Accords tensioner failed was not fun

Thanks for the help guys!
Mike
