the mark on the top of the flywheel is slightly on the driver's side of the car, if nobody beats me to it I'll take a picture in the morning...it's rather dark outside and the parents are light sleepers..would wake up if I went outside right now. Look between the brake master cylinder and the centerline of the car.

Are you serious, or is it sarcasm? I mean, is there such thing as a 1/2 stroke engine? I've never heard of the engines being that different in a 944.

It's sarcasm.

The cam opens and closes the intake valve with one rotation of the crank. It opens and closes the exhaust valve with the second rotation of the crank (4 strokes - two up, two down). In other words, the cams spins once for each two rotations of the crank.

If it worked as you suggest, with each rotation of the crank both valves would open and close. That is clearly not what happens.

I can further assure you I've seen the flywheel mark lined up with the cam 180* off. This is precisely because the crank rotates twice for each rotation of the cam. This is why I line up the cam first. This is sort of a rough alignment. Once the cam is lined up, then I look at the flywheel mark and make the fine adjustment to get it lined up precisely.

I guess I believe you...But I'm still going to have to check next time I have to put my engine at TDC. Have to see it for myself.

Basic stuff, man;

4-stroke engine. Up 1 = compression, Down 2 = power, Up 3 = exhaust, Down 4 = intake. Or... look at the gears. The cam gear is twice the size of the crank gear. If you set the cam gear on the mark, you have a 50/50 chance of having the flywheel mark lined up.

What!? That is what I was saying from the beginning. If the cam gear is lined up the flywheel might not be. Therefore spin the cam gear another rotation to have both marks line up.

When you finally get it to TDC, try and mark the flywheel line with some white paint. Worked on several 944s with the line marked. It makes a world of difference. It is tough to see the line.

Okay, my dad and I talked about this for several minutes. The best we can figure is that as the engine turns the two TDC marks are not perfectly in sync. The marks are only in sync with eachother for every 2 rotations of the cam and 4 rotations of the crank. Does this sound right?
