Default CV Bolts...WTF?

Ok, so I'm bleeding the brakes for a track session that's coming tonight, and I notice that on the driver's side, at the transmission 4 of the 6 CV bolts have backed out!!!! so, I grab my handy Torque Wrench, set it to 42 n-m and put em back in... checked the other side, and they were all loose... so I call up a local Porsche shop, and confirm the torque at 42 n-m... Then I asked if they've ever seen that before... they said "Yeah, actually all the time... they just tend to back out... it's wierd. but it's only on replacement CV...never from the factory..."

Anyway, I do beleive I dodged a bullet that was pretty damn close to me... anyone else ever have their CV bolts back out? if not, go check!

Yep. Happened to me shortly after I sold my '84 NA. I had purchased an '87 NA on the cheap, and used the cash from the '84 to give the "new" car a new head gasket, water pump, Konis, rebuilt ball joints, new speakers, and some other odds and ends.

Anyway I was just tooling around one afternoon and stopped at a traffic light. As I pulled away from the light I heard this loud "snap" and the car started coasting. I pulled into a parking lot and got out to take a look.

All but one of the CV bolts on the passenger side outer CV had backed out, and the snap I heard was the last one breaking.

I put 4 sets of new bolts in and haven't had a problem since.

Thats one of the reasons why teh factory recommends replacing the bolts, rather than reusing them. Its also very important to ensure the threads don't get any cv grease on them.

Hmmm...

I know a lot of people have had this happen. I've had mine out a whole bunch of times over the years. Never replaced one. They are the originals. Customer cars too. I've never had one come loose... yet.

I have a theory. I don't use the flipping torque spec. 8" 3/8" ratchet and give'um a good hard tweak. I always check paint them on the track cars, but I've never had ANY of them come loose. I'll take good old fashioned feel over a torque spec, thank you...

...Except on head studs!

Why don't people use loctite?

I have used new ones, loctite and even Redlin's hand tight system.

Still have had themback out.

My advice is get new one, bluc loctite, Redline's hand tight AND Scott's CLEAN THREADS in both bolt and hole. I believe mine backed out due to grease.
