Question Re-stiching leather steering wheel

What kind of thread should I use? And where can I get it in dark blue?

There is actually special thread for automotive upholstery. You might just try calling a couple of local upholstery shops to see if they'll sell you some. If not, try Autos Int'l.

Two needles at the same time?? No wonder I couldn't produce that same factory stitch pattern. I know what you mean Tom, the thread I used is a little heavy and it serves well exfoliating the caluses. Double needles, I would have never figured. When I redo mine 21 years from know I hope I'll remember.

I checked with some local upholstery shops. They are recommending a wax coated linen thread that is thick enough so it won't cut the leather. The problem is they only have it in brown or black.

The two needles techniqe is just like lacing a pair of shoes. I just replaced my shift boot with an AGLA leather boot and it has the directions for their leather wheel kit as well and that is the technique they recommend.

If anyone knows where I can get some dark blue thread let me know.

try any fabric store. i understand what the upholstery shop says, but wouldnt be too concerned.

the leather is old and already molded to the wheel. all i was doing was tying the twp sides together, if i pulled i would have cut the leather, so i didnt put that much pressure on it.

if i screw it up real bad i am out $8, and i buy the kit. if it works, i am up $25

Glad it came out well! Preserving the original leather is definitely the right call. The funny thing about the two needles method is that I actually knew that the AGLA kit came that way, but it just didn't occur to me as I was watching Tom struggle with the one. My father, who has probably not even seen anyone sew anything onto anything else since the 1950s took one look at Tom's plight and suggested it right away. Cricket still slowly learns from the master.
