Default Fiberglass hood article

As promised, some eight or nine months ago, the fiberglass hood article is now complete (as is the hood). To any interested in getting a copy before it appears in print, I can forward by request. It is available in one of two formats. The pdf file is about 3 Meg and Word document is about 9 Meg (lots of pictures). As you can imagine - I'd prefer to send the pdf file as it is significantly smaller.

I have looked at the 944 hood and I think it is possible to use my "outer skin" mold technique. The problem after that becomes how to "hinge" the hood. It would take a lot of structure and hence extra weight to retain the hood struts (maybe one only). More than likely, you'd be better off without the struts and employ a prop rod instead. Anyway - the article is complete. Take it for what it's worth...

testa,

I am not the web guy. It will take a while for it to get posted there. If you want the article in the shortest time - you need to provide an email address so I can send it to you. (You too Mike). Just telling me you want it here - without an address - does no good. Unless I am missing something, I don't see any way to attach files to a PM.

If you have a good mold, the job is 75% done. Assuming you gel coat and wax properly, the layup is quite simple and doesn't take much time at all. Also, did you have a top and bottom mold? That ensures that the layup wont have as many voids as it cures.

You should consider making more or just selling the mold to someone who will.

Scott, I just wanted to say thanks for putting a lot of effort into this article. I really shows. If you're thinking of doing any fiberglass work, it's a must read!
Thanks!

Great write-up Scott! From a purely literary standpoint the writing was intelligent without being overly technical, and your experience definitely shows. I was also impressed by the editing, with nary a grammatical or spelling error in sight. The subtle humor was a great touch as well.

I've had some non-automotive fiberglass projects that I've been considering for a while now, and this is exactly what I need to get me started. Hopefully I can work up my skills enough to start doing automotive parts in the near future!

You know, there are fiberglass how-tos all over the internet, but rarely do you find a well-written one, done by someone with experience and skill. If you have other skills that you'd like to share with us in the future - don't hesitate!
