Project 949 takes new direction!!!
OK, Early this year, the 949 project was put on hold due to funds. While I'm still broke, maybe more so now than then, I'm bored as hell and feel the need to boost something. I've been thinking about projects that would be semi cheap to play with. I dropped the 949 project when I figured it would not be done for the fest, unhappy with some layout issues and lack of funding. I'm looking at redesigning some things with the layout and instead of planning it out to be a "bolt-on" for the 954. I'm going to build a whole car. My original plan was to build it to go on the 954 with no modifications for fitment as far as the car, tub, engine bay. I also was planning on taking the "axe" to the 87 parts car, cut and scrap keeping some collision parts.
The plan, redesign the layout for performance, relocate both turbos to the batter box area using whatever room I need for clean plumbing and design. Exhaust is planned to exit through a large hole on the fender in front of the passenger door(as if the 954 wasn't loud enough).
This car will be all go, no cushy nothing. I plan for 2 seats, a fiberglass dash(top only) and a guage cluster.
Another project I was looking at. A home cooked wide body and lightened body pannels. I have been thinking of trying my hand at fiberglass work this summer anyway.
In short, I like the 954, I don't want to mess it up trying to build it into something I didn't plan. I don't want it to end up being a calamity of afterthoughts.
Ok, ok, I know you want an ETA. It will be done when it's done right. I'm thinking about a 3 yr project??

heck yeah!!!!! maybe use lots of fiberglass in the interior to make it look like its a warehouse of car parts. exposed gauges, some wiring, exposed shifter and no sound deadening. pull the whole theme together. ive been messign with fiberglass more, but all of my ideas take longer than i planned, since im not used to having a girlfriend to spend time with. i was messign with ideas using multiple layers of glass, and squeegeeing excess resin out to make lighter stronger panels...the dude that was supposed to help me vacuum bag wont get ahold of me. let me know if i can help andy. i have about 3 gallons of polyester resin, and about 10 packages of fiberglass cloth and a little chop mat left. post pics soon.

I've been thinking of wide body stuff. I'm taking a liking to the Kremer 935 nose, the frontal view of that car looks similar to a 944 anyway. The plan, all out race. I was thinking no front lights, maybe driving lights. The Kremer front looks to be a good option. The lights won't be legal heighth, but neither will the 4" exhaust out the fender that will be about 11" long and unbaffled. I'll get some pics of the car I'm building and along the way. The location of the turbos has changed for the better. I can now design a manifold and other piping that is better for performance instead of fitment. Also, no turbo under the intake will releive a bit of heat load along with giving extra room for a better intake design. I'm quite excited to say the least, finally a project to keep me buisy and the options are almost wide open. I beleive the firewall from the heater box area to the passenger footwell will be moved back to the windsheild and the battery box will be removed as well. Both turbos will be placed here. Intake length will be bumped up by about 2-3ft tops, but the extra room for an improved exhaust should more than make up for the added lenght. I hardly call it a sacrifice. The wide body may end up being steele instead to cut some costs. I'll have to make prototypes out of steele anyway to cast a mould from, then make the FG parts from them. I could considerable cut the initial cost by just running my prototypes and waiting till later to cast moulds from them. Not sure at this point. This should be a fun project!!!

I should have pics soon, I'm off to the garage, no "real" progress right now. I've been planning things out for placement and plumbing. I hope to have the turbos mounted tonight.

I'm locating them where the battery normally goes, I cut the battery box floor out. I'm building a mounting "rack" for the turbos from 1/4" SS. They will be rigidly mounted with proper measures taken for heat expansion and flexing. I have done about nothing as far as planning or building the header, I plan to have the turbos, box and exit plumbing done for location and working room before I do anything on the header. I need to know where to aim it first before laying it out. I also hope to go 4-1 this time with longer, equal length runners. To reseal the firewall, I have a sheet of 1/8" aluminum that should work fine. I'll build a box with an access door to be able to work on the system and tune it.

No pics at this time, I'll be on it all day sat(tomorrow). I hope to get something done. I told Rock I'd start on his car after the Fest. I need to seal up the holes before then.
