not to hijack this thread, but....

Has anyone converted from a lighted key head to a 993 (?) switch blade?

Searched and only found a few 99x guys disgruntled with the switch blade who converted TO a lighted key head.

The reason the LEDs seem so bright to look at is simply because the light is so very well focused. Shine the light of one led on the wall against a regular size flashlight, and you can see there is no comparison in overall lumens.

65 lumens, that's reasonably bright, considering the average 60 watt light bulb outputs about 400 lumens. Not bad for a 5W LED, considering on average, LED's are less efficient than incandescent bulbs.

Tony, the funny part is this... a rough conversion from lumens to candela (according to a quick, bored Google search) is lumens/12.57= candela

65/12.57 ~= 5.1 c = 5100mcd

...that super bright flashlight is not even 5 times brighter than my key

Tony, about the heat though, LEDs DO run colder than incandecents of the same intensity. It's this very reason I'm converting my dash lights soon to LED.

Sorry it took so long to get pics of the internals...

One picture I don't feel like modifying to show you all is the one with just the cap off the key. It shows how a non-conducting piece must block the (+) LED arm from touching anything but the top of the upper battery. Basically, I just used a small piece of paper to shield it from the lower battery (if it touched, I'd only have 3 volts instead of 4.5).

Here's the rest of the assembly though:

I think you have that backwards there. LED's are far more efficient than incandescents.

That's part of it. Intensity is intensity though... the particle-light is really what blinds you though when you look at it. The intensity is not effected when the LED isn't a focused LED, however. My LED key doesn't shoot a small light area, but is actually pretty flooding compared to most LED flashlights I've used/have had. I compared my key to my Streamlight LED flashlight and was surprised to see my key is actually brighter!

I lost my key that had the modded LED light. Can SOMEONE post how to do the mod, and what materials are needed from Radio Shack? I forgot, and the sight that used to host the info is not working anymore.

Anyone??

now that the main question is answered, how does one convert a 944 key, to a 993 switchblade or a newer cayanne (sp?) key.
is it even possible??

You should be happy you have the nice, cheap 944 key! The newer Porsche keys are a FORTUNE!

Those stupid clunky flip-out keys are stupid and clunky, IMO.

When did they start producing those lighted keys? One of my friends with a '92 968 has the basic round-headed 944 key, and I got the lighted key with my '95 968.

I just bought an LED keychain, and used the bulb and batteries from that to upgrade my key.
