Default Bad lifters?

When I got my valve cover off I noticed that two of the lifters were weak, I could pretty easily push the centers in. They just need to be thrown away right? The others feel just fine, is it okay to only replace 2 of them?

Did you find any broken springs now that you can see the valve train? You can try replacing them with some good used ones soaked well in oil first, it seems the new ones from Germany (INA) are having a pretty good failure rate.

Maybe I'll look around for some local used ones then. What about new ones? To prep them do you just have to let them soak in oil?

You might want to read this thread first before you buy new ones; not my opinion but it will make you think twice.

Beware ! This is a common mistake "2 of 8 are weak". This is beacuse 2 of valves are always compressed making 2 lifters have no oil in internal circulation. It is impossible to test it without special equipment - no "oil injections" will help here as mentioned on other threads. The only "home-made" test is stethoscope on running engine. If You don't have any ticking noises - put it back and forget it.

I did have a ticking, but the lifters that are weak are 3 and 7 (starting at the front of the car). Are these the ones if it were to be at TDC?
