Default Oil Change time and have some questions...

So its time for another oil change. My question is should I switch from dino to Mobil 1 15 -50? Also if I decide to switch to the Mobil 1 I will probably go with the 15K synthetic. How long will an OEM Mahle filters last?

I swear and live by Mobil-1 in all my cars. Everytime it's oil change time, I also do the filter, as it doesn't seem to make sense to me to run new oil through a dirty oil filter.

If you doubt that a synthetic is worth it, you may want to read this: http://www.trustmymechanic.com/motor-oil-bible.pdf

I realize that every time you change the oil you should change the filter, but what about changing the filter without changing the oil... If I use the 15K mile synthetic, I seriously doubt the OEM filter will last for 15K miles...

Today's oils long outlast filters. Run the oil for 15k, but change the filters as normal, every 3k, and top off the oil for the little you lose in the filter.

I'm going back to Mobil 1. I'm VERY displeased with Castrol GTX 20W50. Put it in my car, went to the track, and after 4 laps, oil pressure drops 1 full bar... bring it in, let it cool, start the car, full oil pressure. 4 laps later, it's down to 4 bar again...

NEVER had that problem with Mobil 1 15w50...NOT ONCE.

The OE oil filters are good for at least 20,000km (12,000mi), probably longer. That's from my 1990 S2/Turbo Guarantee and Maintenance manual.

OTOH, Jiffy-Lube will tell you you have to change your oil and oil filters every 3,000mi. Take your pick who to believe .

Well, just putting what I know together: With a dino oil running, it's typically not very long before it's black black can be. The black color has to be dirt, grime, grit, varnish, etc. some of which would be clogging the oil filter.

I changed my oil last year before I put it away for storage with Mobil-1, and it's still a creamy color. So it would appear to have not been contaminated dirt, grit, grime, and varnish etc. At least not yet.

Check out the oil bible link in my last post. I read it and it made some pretty strong arugments for synthetic motor oil.

I believe my own results, testing filter clogging and bypass percentage. I don't run a filter past 3500 miles as at that point it's bypassing more oil than I'm comfortable with due to clogging.

OK, so that's Sam + Jiffy-Lube versus those morons in Stuttgart that actually designed and built my car. Hmmm.... who do I go with on this?

I change my dino oil with filter every 3k. It's hard for me to drain oil that looks absolutely brand new.

If you have any doubt that your car is running slightly worse than out of the factory, change the oil every 3k. If your car runs well, and doesn't dirty the oil, change it less often.

I have a hard time believing that, if the oil is changed regularly (<5k miles), any of the SAE approved oils will show much advantage over the other.
