woohoo! my car broke down!
#@$^@)^$@!$
Well, I guess it was inevitable. My car ran fine all year when I was at school, now it breaks down. When I started my car today while I was out running errands and I noticed a rattling. I thought it was the catalytic converter, as it sounded like it was coming from that location. I figured maybe a couple of the exhaust bolts were loose so I'll tighten them when I get home. One mile later down the road I heard a pop from the exhaust and it died. When I turned it over the exhaust would make a light popping noise every second or so randomly. I thought maybe a piece of the cat broke and it was clogged. After we towed it home I tried turning it over again. After a couple of tries it fired up. The familiar rattling sound was back, this time maybe a little louder. When I got out of the car I noticed it was coming from the engine. Opened the hood and it sounds like maybe the valves are hitting or maybe a spring broke. Through all of my valve issues this sound is new. Not the sound of a broken valve, or fragments of valve seals in the cylinders. I have no idea...compression test is coming soon.

didn't know if you thought of it but could it be a bad lifter...right now my car when i first start it up has a knocking sound under the valve cover...but after a minute it does away (i think its sticking)

If worst case scenario rolls around, I'll probably be going through there on my way to the fest
Hope its something simple tho!!

I will NOT miss 944fest, no matter what I'll ride up with someone. I would like to have my car though. Last time I started it I noticed that it did have oil pressure, it just sounds like a diesel. When I get the compression tester tomorrow I will check it and see whats up.

Check the belts before you do anything man. Nothing really comes to mind on this one. Belt slipped a little and the valves are contacting the pistons?? Not sure man, good luck and keep us posted.

I checked the t-belt right afterward, it was still intact and had some tension on it. That's going to be one of the first things I check though. See if it could have slipped a couple of teeth. What kind of noise does the engine make if a valve spring breaks? Right now it sounds exactly like a diesel engine.

Use a "stethoscope" and try to isolate the noise. Is it coming from the cam tower or the head?
I think it's just worn lifters. They can get very noisy, especially on start up.

Worn lifters would have shown signs of going out though, wouldn't they? I had no sound problems with my engine except a slight ticking which is still there (from dropping a valve 1.5 years ago or so) I let it run for roughly a minute when I got it started and the noise didn't change.

Like others said about a stethescope... also check the crank case...
May be bad... my 924S sounded like it had a bit of a valve tapping, then about 150 miles later, oil pressure dropped to 1.4 while doing 75 MPH in 5th gear... Ended up being a spun bearing...
Best of luck my friend...
