Default Evaporator removal help needed - late 944

It looks like the A/C evaporator in my 1986 NA 944 is leaking. I removed my heater blower box from the engine bay and checked with an electronic freon leak detector. The expansion valve showed no leaks, but the tester went crazy over the evaporator fins that show through.

I was thinking of foregoing A/C altogether but I'm in San Diego and this car has everything sorted so nicely and has no other bad habits.

The evaporator removal looks like a nightmare and gets removed from under the dash. Has anyone done this job or have good info from the service manuals? Anyone in S. Calif willing to assist? It looks like I might be able to do this by removing the console and dropping the lower half of the A/C-Heater black plastic cover. Step by step help would be appreciated. The thought of removing the entire dash gives me heartburn. Thanks....

May not help much since you have a late dash car, but on the early dash cars it is pretty easy to drop the whole thing out as a unit. It has been about 7 years since I removed it from my car, but really all that was required was to remove the kick panel under the glove box, disconnect a bunch of electrical connectors, disconnect some hoses and unbolt the unit, not necessarily in that order. Dash stayed in place.

Michael,
Thanks. From what I hear, early=easy and late=laborius. On the late, the heater core and the evaporator are integrated into a monstrous housing. My question, I guess, is if one can drop the lower half of the housing (#38) without pulling the dash. See:
