Be very worried, lots of 944s have burned up due to leaking fuel lines. Check the lines to the fuel rail, I know on a 951 the line from the rail to the fuel pressure damper is the notorious one. If they haven't been replaced, they should be. I think the lines near the fuel filter in back can also leak, those aren't as scary though.

Thanks to another helpful Rennlister, my strong smell of gasoline was due to the 1/4" hose fitting on the filler neck missing the rubber "O" ring, so gas was getting into the passenger side cubby. I used some sealant around the metal pipe onto which the drain hose fits and cured it temporarily. Also the drain hose has to be through the hole in the cubby wall. Mine is an early 944 and has 2 drain hoses, one for gasoline, the other for the sunroof drain.
Hope this helps,
Mike

If its when you fill the car up many times these problems are found to be leaky hoses around the tank or filler neck (easy) or in my case the tank itself was leaky (not-so easy). Fill us in with some more details on when it smells and are you seeing drips etc...

I figured out that my solution was not to try to closely sniff the air shortly after filling up with gas or while driving by gas stations. No leaks found, just a driver with way too sensitive olfactory glands...
