Default Alternator help!

My alternator on my '86 NA is on it's way out, and I'd like to replace it soon... before it fails on me and leaves me stranded. So I have a few questions.

Will an "S", turbo, early, or 968 alternator work on my '86, or do I need to find a late NA alternator?

Anyone have any expreience with the $90 ebay rebult alternators? It seems like a good way to go since they are $190 + $75 core at paragon and similar prices at autozone and places like that.

Or, should I try to find someone parting out a 944 and use their used alternator. I know it's hit or miss, but could save me some big $$$.

Recommendations??

How long do you plan on keeping your car? More than a year- see the dealer. HTH

Take the car to a dealer for an alternator replacement?? Thanks for the advice, but I think I'm gonna wait for a second opinion.

How low is your output?

I would contact someone parting out a car or a dismantler such as Parts Heaven or Oklahoma Foreign before I would buy one from e-bay.

Also it is likely your voltage regulator is worn and can be replaced for $20. PM Iceshark for details.

normal output is reading about 12.5-13 V

However, a few times recently, it has dropped to 12.0, and then come back to "normal" after a few minutes.

My 2bits: Get thee to an auto electiric shop that does its own rebuilding and pay them what they want to rebuild your alternator. That's what I did and I got a lesson in alternator 101 to boot. Your one will be plumb worn out, as will any similar aged unit. Our alternators are not to special, only uncommon. I payed 90$CDN at my local shop.

The early 944 and 924S use 90 amp alternator and 5 rib belt, the later 944, S, and turbo use a 115 amp output with 6 rib belt. You can physically bolt one up in place of the other, but there is the belt issue.

Just get a later car alternator (from wherever you can source one here, Ebay, craigslist.org, or a junkyard) and do the swap yourself. It's not too time consuming and worth it. My alternator was screwed up and I made the mistake of not checking PET for part number differences between later and early cars - 90v vs 115v is right. If you are entirely unsure, follow the Haynes manual for the easy instruction steps on pg. 117.

I was checking on ebay and there are a few rebuilt ones on there that are $100 + $20 shipping. I'd do that but they all say 130A...

I need a 115A right?

heres a link: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...spagename=WDVW

Yes, you need 115a per Schumi in the post above...
