Take a look up there. It would be worth while to get a new belt and slap it on just to see if anything is bent before you go "chuckn' a V8" in there .

Like Seb said, you can roll the pistons to TDC using the marks on the flywheel. Take off the belts and then you can align the camshaft to TDC as well. Also need to see if the chain is in one piece.

Whatever you do, get it done before the "Rennstock v2.0" event.

Ok found the belt stripped by the drive gear on the crank.

Heres my question. If I can turn the engine through a full rotation with the belt off and I do not hit the valves does that mean all my valves are bent?

if you were idling and you did hit the valves theres a good chance you may have only bent 2 or 4. you can most likely figure out if youve bent any valves by checking compresion, if there is non youve got bent vavles in that cyl

You can slap a new belt on there and without much reassembly do a leakdown test and/or rotate the engine over with the cam cover off and watch for hung-up valves. Make sure you have the cam timing right first though. You say you have checked the cam chain? Sometimes the cam chain crash causes the cam belt to strip or break. You took the cam cover off and saw that it was all OK? Plastic tensioner pad is not wedged in the cam gears?

Yup, cam chain looks new. No problems up there.

I would think that I would be hitting valves by rotating the engine. Which I am not.

Have you rotated the cams at all? I suppose your belt may have stripped due to age but what you are seeing is usually caused by a seized top end. If not it might be possible to have the valves in a spot where the bottom end can rotate freely (I'm not sure) or you have bent whatever valves were in the way. If you turn the cams at all (maybe just forward and back a bit) put them back where they are now just in case. You can mark the cam sprocket.

How do you turn the cams?
Should they turn easily?
I tried turning the drive gear that the timing belt uses but it would not move.

They should turn pretty easily with the plugs out. The bolt on the cam drive should work, you could put 15-20 ft/lbs on that guy I would suppose.
