Default 1986 944 vs. 2005 Chrysler 300

While watching TV with a pal the other day, an ad for the Chrysler 300 came on and started a debate. He maintains that the 2005 300 is a better handler in the curves than my 20-year-old 944 NA. Now I know for a fact that the 300 would easily out-gun me in the straights, but how about the curves? We used our local curvy and hilly road (Highway 17 between San Jose and Santa Cruz in Northern California) as the reference, but I suppose a track could be used instead. Furthermore, he maintains that many current generation sedans are superior to the 944 in the curves. So, let's have it, gang. Is a modern sedan (the 300 in particular) a better handler in the curves than a 944?

if the 944 doesn't have sway bars, the shocks and struts are shot, yeah maybe. the 944 was the best handling production car of it's time. it still handles better than most of production cares out there. i don't know what your friend is smoking, but can i have some?

The Magnum and 300 both do not come close to a 944...

(I have not driven the SRT-8 but I hear its pretty good from magazines and such!)

I wonder about the new charger. I saw one of those POS's at a dealer the other day.

Not that anyone cares which one is faster, the 944 will beat the 3700 pound pig more easily than taking candy from a baby IMO. If I were a betting man, using NEW stock suspension components on the 944 vs the 2005 300, I put money on the 944 by a long shot.

I had a new 300 as a rental (I always keep a rental for my business, and they switch me into a new car every 2 weeks.) , and being the base non-hemi, it was a total POS. I imagine the loaded up version is better, but who knows how much better. . . . .

The new charger is great. I have drove them and love them. I like the 300c better though just b/c of the looks. And all 3 have a good feel while driving. If they were lower with stiffer springs I really think it would be close.

well if your driving a 300 youve already lost, so what the point?
all the new chryslers are soooo ugly, less you live in the hood and have a nice grill (and im not talking about the one on the car or in your back yard).
looks like they threw some bling bling, and some good ole boys on a buick

i've driven both an sxt and srt-8 dodge magnum (same car) and i'd only think an 8 cylinder would have compariable straightline performance than the 944...these cars are 3800lbs+ just for a rwd version and the 8 cylinder ones are 4000lbs+ with just rwd...awd models are even heavier srt-8 with awd is 4400lbs!

the rwd sxt which is the "lightweight" model handles ok but no where near even my abused and old 944 with an old & tired suspension

pcutt, your friend is wrong.

The 300M handles like a dump truck in comparsion to a well kept 944N/A.

WRX STi counts as a modern sedan right? In that case, the 944 doesn't stand a chance!

a 300C would be even worse than the 300M, considering the M is 600 lbs lighter!!!!

Unless of course it's a modified turbo!
