i think a lot of people also do the balance shaft belt, and all the rollers. and then a whiel you are in there job could invlude front engine seals if you are ambitious

If you are going in, do the timing and balance shaft belt, the rollers (Balance shaft roller, BS idle roller, Timing belt roller, Timing belt idle roller), the waterpump and the front seals....then you don't have to worry about anything for a long time. It sucks to just go in and do belts and even a waterpump, then in 6 months have the front seals start to leak oil.....doh.

1 hour of preparation translates into saving many hours lost running to get tools, maybe even having to shut down and wait for parts delivery. I would strongly suggest taking a picture or making a detailed drawing of certain things as you're taking it apart-off the top of my head I think of all shaft alignments, those "O"s and such will confuse you later. I'm about to do the same including front seals, cam housing seal(delete?-see "Cam housing delete?" thread), struts and shocks, monoball strut mounts, tie rod ends, motor mounts,SS brake lines, cap & rotor, and a million other little things. I love working on the Porsche! The only time better spent IMO is driving the thing.

well thi is the 1st maintance that this car has had in a long time i think, because the P.O. took lousy care of it. Im sorry im not going to do this since it is my 1st time to have it done to the carin a while, im going to have a shop that is pretty local known as Autoscope do it. Unless i find a better deal! they are curently working on my dads 928 with his issues. So as i read ill have the timing belt the water pump rollers balance shaft belt and the front seal is that it because im going to get quotes tommarow, i also need motor mounts done but i may do that on my own! eventually ill be going with bilstein raceing suspension all around and upgrade the brakes! then ill get to the looks adding 968 mirrors and maybe some front leather seat rebuilder kit that i have seen!

Serge and I have done belts now on both of my cars, he's done many more on his own bombers. The thing that sticks out in my mind is something Serge has found out. On every car except my Turbo the balance shafts have been off by up to 90 degrees. I drove the 83 for 18 months thinking the motor mounts were going out. With the BS's aligned properly, it's like a new car. Take your time, follow instructions, and the job is quite easy. If your front main seal is leaking count on twice the work but knowing you have a fresh front end is Golden.

No kidding Steve. I have YET to do a t-belt on a 944 without misaligned balance shafts. (4!) They make such a huge difference too...

Oh, and my 84 is also misaligned. Make that 5.

Note: The above prices are what were charged to me on 4/28/05 and subject to change and do not include handling charges, freight/shipping, rush orders from Germany, etc (For me, that was about an additional $150.00 or so). Different dealers will have differing prices and, in some cases, there may be product quality differences. Almost all of the above parts were purchased from a Porsche dealership. No guarantees are made as to accuracy of the list. Please check with the PET and the dealer you work with before ordering. Yes, I had a few parts that I didn't use..but not many.

Bone dry

It really amazes me how the local independent shop did the water pump, belts, rollers, seals and everything in 4 hours on the 88 NA........makes me think!!
