Shops that specialize in 911s (specifically the pre-964 series) will be very familiar with torsion bars. Hopefully that will help when it comes to your 944.

The trick is finding shops that don't pad their labor charge by quoting full price.
It isnt padding anything. It is a matter of a fair price for a fair amount of labor. Yeah, they might get yours done in 5 hours. They might also have to reindex them 5 times and it might take them 20 hours. it isnt like they are going to charge you the difference.

Simply put, if you dont like the way shops do business then you will have to do it yourself. You should budget at least a weekend because I can almost guarantee it will take you the entire weekend.

Funny story: I told a guy one time how long it was to do ball joints on his F250, he said he wouldnt pay that much. I said ok and before he hung up I offered him the number of a tow company. Sure enough two days later he called me back for the tow truck number.

Exactly. And a shop that charges 18 hours of labor for a job they KNOW they can complete in 9 hours is not charging a fair price as far as I'm concerned. Like I said...padding.

lol...I've never ridden in a car with no springs what so ever. It could be interesting. Honestly though, I wonder if anyone has given any thought to converting to a coil spring in the rear. I've seen IFS trucks become live axle, and I've seen VW Corrados become 4-wheel independent...anything's possible!

It will take about the same amount of time to delete them - you simply wont have to worry about indexing incorrectly. A PITA any way you look at it. That quote is not bad.

Lol tifo.

Urin 2nd,
It's done all the time... thas the plan for me... I think I'm actually going to be converting some Koni's myself (with the help of a shop)
If you really want that 944's handeling to come alive, I think its the way it should be done.
Tifo, do you know if the M030 is valved the same as OTS Koni Yellows? I need to find out to decide if I need to revalve right away or not. I know OTS (off the shelf) yellows WILL handle 500 pd springs, but thats about the area you start to leave the comfort range.

Coilovers don't have an advantage over torsion bars unless you want adjustability. It's just a shame there are no good adjustable shocks for the 944s. IMO, the koni is hardly "adjustable" when you have to take the whole shock off the car - and then its just a guessing game. Shocks is the only reason I see for blowing all that money on rear coilovers as some have very good valving adjustability...

I wonder if a KYB AGX made for a similar car would work on the 944...

If it were me, Eyal, I would go firehawk shocks with some big torsion bars. But then you'll have to commit...

You know, for coil rear ends being done "all the time," i sure don't see too many of them. Besides Eyal, your car only runs 2 days out of the month anyway. lol!

What's required to ditch the torsions?

I'm curious to know if any of you have either done torsions themselves, or had shops install them. I can't see it being more than a few hours of labor. Why the inflated price?!
Well

Aligment and corner balance is a $200 job. So that leaves $600 for t-bars. The job is a 8+hr job so price does not seem that far out of line.

Vision knows how to do the bars. Shop labor costs in general are high.

They can be done at home. I have installed first 28 mm t-bar and hen 30 mm t-bars. Both done right the first time.

you're not very good at taking advice are you?

Search. It's not done every day but often enough to be common.

How much does it cost to remove t-bars completly? Labor wise maybe you save $200, but he parts to put coilovers on will cost you $500 MORE that t-bars. So no savingss.

Try to combined t-bars with rear coilover and you must index the bars which is the same cost at t-bar replacement.

PS... you don't need and fancy tool to reindex the bars nor do you need to do it a bunch of times either. Just have a simple tape measure and follow this http://members.rennlist.com/m758/tbarreindex.htm proceedure and you only need to do them once.

Joe, thanks for the writeup on your website. It's quite helpful and I plan to do t-bars over summer.
