Question Offset question et65

Will using a 18x10 et65 on an early turbo be safe? What would be a proper spacer thickness to use? By mind poor mental measurements, I'm looking at over an inch and a half or 42mm. It seems sketchy in my mind, but I dunno. Is that pushing it too much? Thanks a bunch.

I'm not concerned about the fronts as I'm about to update to the later offset.

The early offset is 23mm, correct? So you should need 42mm spacers by my math as well.
Isn't 65mm offset for 928's? I just bought some winter wheels that were 65mm offset and I think the guy said they were from a 928.

If you update your front end to the late offset, you will only have a 52.3mm offset, so you would still need 12.7mm spacers to make it correct. I'm not 100% sure what the closest size to that is, but I think there are 11mm spacers out there?

I have the H&R 38mm spacers with 65ET 18x10 twists on rear of my 86. I got them at a great price so use them despite slightly smaller than ideal. I think the 42s are a better fit. For me, no rubbing, no issues.

Yea, the early cars are 23mm. From my research twists came in 40mm and 65mm offset in the rear for 993's.

I don't think I'll need a spacer for the front since the twists are 50mm offset in front paired with the late offset. Correct?

Did you have any concerns about loads with 42mm - ish spacers? Also, what's your width tire on the rear. Nice car too.

For what it's worth, I ran late offset (52.3mm) on an early-offset car as my winter wheels, so they were only on 7" rims, but they didn't rub at all, ran that on all 4 corners.

So, the front rims are only 50mm offset? You'll be pretty much perfect then.

for what it's worth, I run 18" twists. Front ET is 50 and they're fine. Rear ET is 40, and they needed moving out a bit to fill the arches. I went with a 6mm spacer to sort that out. Of course that's on my late offset car. I thought though that the Turbos were all late offset.....?

I think so for the fronts. I was just concerned with running over an inch and a half of spacer in the rear. I guess its fine since other are ok with it.

You need 45mm offset to fit a 10" rim on an early car. So figure 20mm spacers...

Rule of thumb: 6.75" backspacing.

"I thought though that the Turbos were all late offset.....?"

The late-offset wheels started in '87+. So the '86 Turbo had early-offset 23.3mm wheels. However, both the '86 Turbo and NA left off the rear 21mm spacer that the early cars had, so the effect is kinda strange with the rear wheels inset about 1" more than the front on the '86 cars... bizarre...

"Isn't 65mm offset for 928's? "

The '88+ TurboS also used 65mm offset front wheels. This is to allow for the bigger 928S4 brakes and thicker rotors.

"I was just concerned with running over an inch and a half of spacer in the rear. I guess its fine since other are ok with it."

Actually, when going to wider wheels in front and rear, you want to push the wheels' centerline inwards by about 1/2" to allow clearance on the outside. Ideally, you want to place just about ALL of the extra width on the inside to run wider tyres. So the stock 23.3mm offset ends up being optimal around 35mm offset. So that 65mm rear wheel only needs a 30mm spacer, the 28mm spacer from the 930 would be about right.

This is ~45mm offset 10" rear on a 86 turbo:

Yup that looks about right. The 45mm offset pretty much puts ALL of the extra 2" of width on the inside where there's more room. My 11.5" wide rear wheels on my '86 puts another 0.5" on the inside and another 1.0" on the outside compared to Sergey's car.
