Exclamation Krikit Belt Tension Tool - LOOK WHAT GATES RUBBER HAS TO SAY

A PCGB member just pointed out that Gates, manufacturer of the Krikit, says DON"T USE THE KRIKIT TO TENSION TIMING BELTS!

http://www.gates.com/brochure.cfm?br...cation_id=2742

What is going on here.

Guess I will for sure keep borrowing the P9201 tool.

I like the phrase, "for setting tension of belts, while engine is off...". Lawyers must of made them say that!

How would the krikit know whether its measuring a timing belt or an alternator belt? Tension is tension...

I prefer using the krikit, but always check against the 9201.

Anyone tried Bruce Arnn's new tensioner kit? Looks like he will be comparing values against the 9201. www.arnnworx.com

I have not tried it yet, but given the good rep and feedback he has here, it is on my "going to buy soon" list.

Bruce continues to impress me with his simple yet effective solutions. He's also developed a neat little boost pressure tester for 951s.
Note his tensioner kit is currently "sold out" due to demand. Good for him!

That makes me feel just a wee bit better about dropping the coin on the P9201 tool a year or so ago. I also noticed that when I bought mine (for $415 I think it was), Performance Products was advertising it for $650, and in the catalog I just got in the mail, it was now up to <gulp> $850 or so. I'd assume that whatever is left of those tools, that's the end of them.

edit - forgot to mention, but having used the 9201 several times now, I'm not convinced that setting the tension is nearly as precise as Porsche would like you to believe. I'll still use it, but that tool is hardly a pillar of outstanding engineering.

Limited Liability...or None in this case. AKA CYA

The only thing I would worry about if they said we have found imperfections and inconsistencies in the injection molding and forging processes and found that there are different tolerances in the "click" mechanisms.

But then that would be a recall wouldn't it

Yep, I agree. I actually tried to purchase his rear wheel bearing tool a few weeks back and he was sold out. I had to drop the cash on the mega-bucks tool from Paragon. I'm certain his worked just as well. He mentioned that his daughter was getting married and that time was short for him at the moment regarding production.

I'm with Jeff - it's a zen thing. FWIW, I have never used the factory tool on my own car and have never had a problem. Have done both early and late engines - too many times in my opinion. Too tight is worse than too loose (arguably) - it seems to me that each time is a bit different and I'm never happy with it until I do a 20 minute run-in and recheck. "If the whine is fine, you've got some time."

P9201 - $700 after you get all the necessary attachments, tax and shipping, etc.

Kriket? 20 bucks.

Same result. This has been debated ad nauseum. I've done several belts with the Kriket. No problems.
