Anyone know if the later 944 (post 85.5) alternatosr will fit an early 944? And vice versa? I know the early ones used 90 amp alternators while the later ones (including 944T, 944S, S2 and 968) used 115 amp ones. Thanks

Not sure if the late will fit on an early but I do know from experiance that an early will fit on a late. Can not see why it would not work the other way around though.

If it fits the bracket you only have to change the pulley. Not sure if the six rib pulley will match the alignment on the early five rib pulley. If it does then you don't have to change the pulley.

When was the last time you changed your timing and balance belts
and/or cam chain and tensioner?

the pulleys on the crank and alternator are different but i think the alternators are the same...but you can't interchange them
the later models 85.5+ use a 6 rib wider belt (requiring a wider alt and crank pulley)
the earlier models use a 5 rib belt

I have done it before on one of the spec race cars because I couldn't find an early one. The late one has one more rib on the belt so the early only use 5 out of 6 slots. I am not sure if I used the original bracket so you may want to check that out.

For an early alt on a late car you will need the 5 rib belt, as the early alt has one extra rib that sticks out further, as I recall from mine. Make sure you get it aligned properly, otherwise it'll shred the belt within days.

I believe the 924S comes with the 90 amp, but I am currently running the 115 amp alt on my car. I think the only thing I had to do was drift out a bushing or something. Since the Bosch remanufactured alternators come without pulleys I had to pull of the old pulley anyway, so no worries there. Plus I run those silly underdrive pulleys anyway so even less worries.
