Default Need some help identifying under dash wires

Hello!

While fixing the classic "broken plastic clip causes full heat" problem (see clark's: http://www.clarks-garage.com/shop-manual/hvac-01.htm), I looked around to see if anything else need to be worked on. I found this while gazing up at my steering column (see attachment). I suspect that these are airbag connectors (It was an option for 89 but mine did not have them) but I would like to be sure I am not leaving something out before I put the seat back in.

Thanks!

Definately not airbag, all of their connectors are way bigger and more complicated than they need to be.
Plus, I have airbags, and still have those connectors

I have a few cars at my house you're welcome to trace the wiring on if you want (airbag and non-airbag cars). West Valley just off the 101.

Jeremy-

I am emailing you a larger picture for you to take a look at. Thanks for the offer to come over. I'm in Gilbert and if I am in your part of town I will definately look you up.

That big gold thing in the upper right is the steering column if that helps.

Hmmm. I am trying to get the pic smaller so you can see the steering column....

Where are the vent clips in relation to this? Also, you said AB's were an option on your car... Are you SURE about this? I mean, is this a US car, or, ROW? I thought ALL of them from '87 or AT LEAST '88 on up had AB's in US.. both right & left....? I know all Turbo S cars did & have never heard of ANY Turbo, period, w/out AB's from '87 up- '86 did not have them, of course. I HATE AB's & would LOVe for mine to have been w/out them... have you ever removed your steering wheel? Just curious about the horn set-up.....

Anyway, I'll try to look under my car in a few hours & check those wires... not that I'll be any help, but, I'll try, nonetheless... I was going to suggest something to do w/wipers- headlight washers...? Does your's have them? Mine does (until I can get them removed w/several other parts, like, passenger AB....I've already got surrounding dash off- driver bag's been gone for years for a Momo...)- I'll check & see if those wires are connected to anything in my car....

Another possibility- factory alarm wire... I know that the left-rear factory speaker wires split back in there & was left open-ended like your's... I couldn't figure out why for several months until someone told me they were for the alarm... made perfect sense in that case....

My last un-educated guess would that it's in some way related to a car-phone connection? Seems highly unlikely, but, those were the years when they were in vogue & optional. Now they're unneccessary, since, everyone & his aunt & uncle has a CELL phone connected to them at all times..... God forbid anyone have more 15 seconds where no one can get in touch w/him IMMEDIATELY for those most important things that people ususually talk about, right...?

Robby-

I took this picture flat on my back with my head stuck in the driver's foot well looking straight up. The clip I replaced is just out of the left side of the frame. If the camera were 2 inches over it would have caught it. I have not completely removed the steering wheel, but have pulled off the horn pad. No extra wires there.

Air bags- Optional on my car (89 NA) but I think the S2 and Turbo had them as standard for that
year. Factory alarm is alive and well....

I think that this might be a 12+ (the red wire) and ground (the brown wire) for some accessory that my car is not equipped with.....Hmmm....no more guesses?

I have those same wires hanging under my dash. I just tapped into that red 12V (it's constant IIRC) wire to power my navigation system, radar detector, and g-tech.

Of course, if you're REALLY lazy and you don't want to trace them, you could just cross the two, see which fuse pops, and look it up.

I was tempted to do just that......but I am beginning to think it is an accessory lead/ground....I'm going to leave it alone for now...

Hey man- I'm really sorry- I forgot all about this- in my defense, I've had a virus/worm (trojan startpage.19.j) & can't get rid of it completely, so, haven't been completely online lately... Anyway, I went downstairs a second ago & looked for you... ok... it took me a few minutes to find, even though I was looking in the right place , immediately... there was tape wrapped around the top of the wires, which obscured the ends & the brown wire was tucked up in there pretty good- I tore the tape off & was looking at EXACTLY what you have in the above pic.... So, my turbo S does not have whatever it is either.... now I want to know..... COULD this have anything to do w/optional car phones? What are the REST of the wires in that loom? What about that GREEN wire? What are all of those....???

Anyone....???

OK- I have a question now... that brown wire- is that DEFINATELY a ground? IF so, could it be used to ground something else, if I connected another wire to it? Like, for an amp or something maybe? Just curious.... for several reasons.... :-)

While looking under my dash to check some fuses, I noticed probably 3-4 sets of unattached wires, as you said, they are most likely for options the car wasn't equipped with (just like I have several blank buttons on the center console/shifter console).
